I originally picked this pistol up five years ago on a trade, took it to the range once before selling it. Surprisingly, I saw it for sale a few weeks ago and couldn’t resist picking it up again to give it more of a shake-down.

The 469 was one of S&W’s “second generation” 9mm pistols, and it was produced from 1983 to 1988. Second Gen S&Ws are, to me, sort of the forgotten generation of the pre-M&P pistols, with Gen 1 and Gen 3 pistols getting more attention—probably because of their longer runs. I’d read back in the 1980s (in “Combat Handguns” magazine I think) that the 469 was “inspired” by the highly-customized ASP version of the Model 39. I don’t know if that’s true, but they share a similar look and the 469 fits perfectly into an ASP holster I had.

The pistol has a few neat features (as well as some less-than-desirable ones) so I thought I’d give it a quick rundown.

The 469 is small and light—it’s got a 3.5” barrel and weighs 26 oz. It’s more or less the same size as a Detective Special.

The barrel has the same conical area by the muzzle as Gen 3’s—I was surprised to learn that.

The hammer is bobbed but is serrated for manual cocking if needed (after pulling the trigger partway I guess.

It has a slide-mounted decocker–safety; I don’t care for these that much to be honest. Mine just has one on the left side; I’ve seen others with ambi safeties.

The front of the trigger guard is deeply checkered if you want to try the 1980s-style “finger forward” grip.

The grips are made of a material called “Delrin”, which apparently is the slipperiest plastic ever made. No joke—these are some slippery grips, with the pebbled texture offering nothing but looks. They’re also weirdly a three-piece grip—in addition to the left and right side panels, there’s a backstrap insert made of the same material.

The frontstrap is serrated, and does offer something to grip when shooting.

One unique feature is the sights—the rear sight is almost a half-circle, to keep the slide as snag-free as possible. There’s a white outline, too.

The ramped front sight is serrated on the sides but has a yellow stripe running the length of the ramp.

The sight picture is different, for sure.

The trigger pulls are surprisingly good—the DA pull has a slight mid-pull stack, but is good otherwise, and the SA pull is short, crisp, a little bit heavy, but with a wonderfully short reset. The video below shows them.

I had a chance to take it to the range today—I’m scheduled for cataract surgery twice this month so it’ll be a while before I make it out again. It was around freezing with just a bit of ice on the range floor—about as good as you’ll get this time of year

Here’s the result of the first ten rounds at a distance of 10m—I found the sights quite tough to pick up with my less-than great eyesight.

Here’s the second ten. I’ll try again post-surgery.

Here’s a video showing these two groups of ten, plus ten more at a fast pace.

The pistol has a fairly snappy recoil with its light weight and high-ish bore axis, but still plenty controllable.

It’s a quirky, fun to shoot little pistol.

Dragonfly, I had cataract surgery on both my eyes this past June. I got the multi focal lenses and I can see my sights just fine. I hear if you get the mono focal lenses that let you see distance without glasses but need glasses for close up work you may be disappointed. You may not be able to see the front sight well for shooting.

Talk to your doctor about this. If you can't afford or can't take the multi focal lenses you may want lenses that let you see up close without glasses for shooting.

Good luck

JJ

On a lighter note.

I remember when the 469 came out. I was at Carter Country's outdoor shooting range north of Houston TX around then. The guy next to me on the pistol range had one and after every DA shot decocked the pistol. I said to myself that he was practicing his DA trigger pull when with a look of disgust on his face he turned to me and said the gun must be broken because he had to push that thing down after every shot!

Next he started to walk down range to change his target while every one else was still shooting and I had to tell him he had to wait until the RO called a cease fire first!!

He was one of those super macho young dudes that thought he knew everything but actually didn't know squat.

Take care

JJ

P. S. I was young then as well. What happened?

My Taxi boss had one in the box. We shot it a bit.

Didn't jam up like my S&W 59.\\but not in the same cool class as my 645.

Thanks for the tip—I looked into multi-focals but the ones they offered are susceptible to "halo-ing" at night when looking at lights. From what I've been told I should only require reading glasses for about 1/2 my armlength or closer.

Great review (and photos), of one of the first truly compact double stack 9mm.s. Charlie Kelsey of Devel Arms also had worked on downsizing the S&W Model 39 and Model 59 and it was generally believed that S&W "borrowed" some of the Model 469 design elements from him. I had a couple of them over the years and you're right, those Delrin grips were slippery as all get out! Also like you I never cared for the slide mounted flat paddle safety/decocker. I think I traded my last one in on a Colt Officers ACP some time back.

Excellent review! Not much else I can say, except maybe there is a aftermarket grip could be put on it.
LATE EDIT:
Found these on Amazon

If you can find them, the Uncle Mike's rubber grip panels were an improvement over the factory grips.
Thanks for the tips, guys. I've not found any yet who'll ship to Canada but I'll keep looking.

You may want to be aware that your pistol falls within the serial number range of a recall.
I read up on that before I bought the pistol as I remembered the old serial number. I don't think I'll go for the recall fix as I only load the pistol on the firing line at the range so I'm thinking it wouldn't be worth the hassle.

I had the 459 about 20 years ago, nice looking, comfortable in the hand, good balance. Hated the long first double-action trigger pull, but the single action pull was crisp, even, and quick reset.

I bought one of these a few years ago. I showed it to a buddy of mine before I could even get it home and he Insisted I sell it to him on the spot (which I did). A few weeks later, he mentioned that his divorce was starting to take a financial toll and would I like to buy it back (I did). Six months later, he had a few bucks kicking around and he wanted to buy the old girl back. We have passed this gun back and forth at least 5 times. I can't even remember at this point if I have it, or if he does. Great little 2nd gen Smiths!

Great review, thanks! And about Delrin plastic, it is so slippery it is what some companies used as the plastic rollers inside the old cassette tapes.....in an attempt to be as frictionless as possible. Makes you wonder why S&W would use the stuff.

Great review of a fine pistol! What baseplate is that on the magazine? Could you share where I might find one like it? Thank you! :)

I had one back in the day. Did everything I asked of it very well. Very reliable, I just never really clicked with it. I could never put my finger on why. Probably the only gun I ever sold and had no idea why I sold it but I did not miss it when it was gone.

I liked mine well enough, just never fully fell in love with it.
The trigger was decent, the sights were tolerable, the size, weight and capacity were good. Felt ok in my hands and never really liked the slide mounted controls.

I sold it and it took me a long time to find something in the same general size/capacity I really liked. It was a nice pistol and I don't regret having thoroughly put it through it's paces if for no other reason to find out what I don't want in a carry gun. I enjoyed my time with it and moved it down the road with no regrets.
I'm very happy with my current P01 that I have to fulfill the same roll.

Thought you might like to see a limited production nickel plated 469 I bought new back in the day.
That's a beautiful pistol--thank you for posting it!

I'm sorry I don't know--when I first bought the pistol five years ago it was for sale second-hand at a dealer. I do like the floor plate--my hands are small enough to fit (barely) without a finger extension

It looks like the finger extension (which I NEED) is designed to come off. And I believe it's a THIRD gen. Model 9 morphed into the 59 which took us to the 459/469. 4th gen included the 6904 and the stainless 6906 which we see in close up in Demolition Man in the hands of Wesley Snipes character.
I LOVE my 469. I have had it for over 30 years. There is something to a few of the complaints but if I think I need to be burglar ready, it's easy enough to get into single action mode. I have only had two stovepipe jams and that was more on the cheap ammo than the gun.

I had one for a few years, traded it in for a 6906 when they came out. I concur with your excellent review. I traded it mostly for the revised grip shape and 3 dot sights, the old 469 did feel kind if blocky in hand. I'm pretty sure the one piece grip on the 6906 is delrin probably because it's extremely tough, the sharp checkering helps that a lot though. I still carry it often IWB.

Nice pistol! I have one slightly similar. Since I will apparently be at home with the flu again tomorrow, maybe I'll finally get around to taking a picture of it.

The 469 was my first pistol.
Solid, reliable, and I couldn't choke it if I tried loading in rocks. Didn't much mind the safety because it was also a decocker, and I would flip it right back off.
The comments about the grip do explain why mine came with aftermarket ones.
In the case of mine, the whole slot of the front sight was (neatly) painted, and the trigger release point as way at the end of the travel. Like, 'pressing it into the frame' far back.
The former was pretty good for a CCW pistol, but I'm sure the latter contributed to why I just couldn't hit where I aimed with it. Consistantly low and to the side.

The Daewoo Lionheart (DP51) magazines are still in production and the baseplates are interchangeable with the 59/469/6904- but the mag body, not so much.
Marlin Camp 9 mags are, however, a perfect fit and function- but have a rather uncomfortable, sharp, steel baseplate.

One benefit to Delrin is that it doesn't grab your shirt and cause it to print or ride up during concealed carry- this is why I avoid Hogue rubber grips like a social disease.
In jacket weather, my 6904 is my belt gun, OWB. The other 10 months of the year here, it is my nightstand gun.
