my fiancee wants the SW9VE as a CCW and i am looking into the ammunition for her.
I want to knock down an attacker. but don't want to damage bystanders, and since she is a good shot i only worry about the bullet passing right through the attacker.

i found the 9MM Vmax. should i stick with it?

Has she taken any self defense with firearms courses? Being able to shoot good when at the range and when someone is trying to kill or badly hurt you are two very different things.

As far as ammo goes, I personally run CorBon DPX's in all of my defensive firearms (MP9, 1911 and AR15). It runs flawlessly and I have had good experiences with it in different mediums. I have shot it through turkeys, chickens, venison, pork, water in jugs, and through drywall and it always expanded for me, so I chose it as my round for SD.

She took a CC class and passed with flying colors. she is very good under attack. she's just good all around with guns. do you know if the Corbon DPX would pass right through an attacker?

any good hollowpoint ammo is fine, except 147g Winchester Rangers. i used to own the Sigma, and that was the only ammo it didn't like to eat. otherwise, most JHP is pretty much the same.

what's more important is that your lady learns to shoot what she has well. the Sigma is a good beginner's gun, but don't expect to shoot IDPA with it. i carried one for a few years, and after a while, i got to be a better shooter than the gun was capable of. i traded up for a 1911, and never looked back.

That's not going to happen.

They may fall down if you hit them in a vital area like the nervous system or heart, but that knock them off their feet is movie fantasy stuff.

i know that it is not going to knock them off their feet but i want it to put some serious power into their chest. i am trying to avoid hollowpoint ammunition because of the tendency to jam in autoloaders. is a 1911 that much more capable of a gun?
what is IDPA?

Most modern autoloaders don't have that much of a problem with hollowpoints. Get a couple boxes of whatever she's going to carry and hit the range. If it gets through them fine, you're good to go. hollowpoints are going to deliver more energy into your target than FMJ as FMJ has a tendency to go on through (plus when a JHP expands it does more tissue damage).

I would be more concerned with overpenetraion with FMJ (which endangers bystanders) and more importantly not getting the maximum amount of energy transferred into the center mass of the guy trying to kill me.

Ironically its one of the few modern autoloaders that can have trouble with hollowpoints (at least it did several decades ago and is the primary source of the concern over JHPs feeding well). Your Sigma will be every bit as reliable as a 1911 (actually Sigma priced 1911s are probably not going to be as reliable).
what is IDPA?
International Defensive Pistol Association. Its a form of competitive shooting that seeks to mimic a more "tactical shooting" environment.
