I've decided to get my first magnum-caliber gun, and right now I'm leaning towards a Super Redhawk .454 with the 7 1/2" barrel. I like the caliber because I don't reload and I think there's a good spectrum of factory ammo available in .45 Colt and .454. I like the gun because Ruger seems to have a good reputation for quality firearms and the Super Redhawk in particular is well thought-of.

I'm wondering if there's anything else of which I should be aware: quality problems in current production Rugers, issues with different finishes, brands I might not know about, potentially better caliber choices, that sort of thing. I would appreciate any input.

Also, feel free to post pics of your SRHs! :)

Yes I would like one of these also but I'm going to buy the Alaskan first.

I don't know if it's much more expensive, but a 460 will fire the aformentioned cartridges (454 and 45lc).

I thought about that, too, Fisherman, but the MSRP of the .460 X-Frame is more than half-again as much as that of the SRH.

If you are not in a hurry I'd bet some will eventually start to show up at pawn shops. (I'll be the first to admit that once I make up my mind waiting is not something I'm good at.)

It's great

Geech, go ahead and get that .454 Ruger SRH, I have one and I love it. I read posts about it on here for a year before I snagged mine. Some people say they are ugly, but only a mamma could love an ugly baby so get one. I was always intrigued how much recoil that it would have over a .44. After firing some 300gr'ers I have to say it is more than a .44, but not unmanagable. Sometimes when I fire it with hot loads I just say "ouch" and then double action up another one, I enjoy it. Sometimes I shoot it at the indoor range just for grins. I have had mixed luck finding good .45 colt loads, most of the time they run pretty dirty. I would still like to find a hotter load than the 300gr from Hornady. I am not reloading .454 right now but may in the future. Anyone tried any .454 cor-bon loads?

I really like mine. It shoots nearly as flat as my 17Mach2 in 100 yds. I never shoot 45 Colts. You can buy pretty mild 250 gr rounds for it or if you reload, you can load mild to wild.

Go for it. I just acquired a SRH 480 in 7.5 inch and it is a blast. The 400 grain Hornady slug went through four phone books, lodging in the last half inch. Recoil is no big deal, although muzzle flip is substantial. Hopefully, a dual Magna-Port job will lessen that. The trigger is smooth for a new gun, both single and double action, and there are four or five makers of a variety of ammo already out there. I am told (no personal experience) the recoil is far less than the 454, but of course, there is not the ammo choice with the 480. I averaged $1.00 per round from Natchez . . .

I don't reload and I think there's a good spectrum of factory ammo available in .45 Colt and .454.

At $1-$1.50 per shot for factory ammo, reloading is a must for the big cannons. I started reloading after I got my Desert Eagle .50 (~$1.15/shot) and my .375 Ultra Mag (~$2.80/shot). Reloading brought the .50 down to $0.35 and the .375 RUM to ~$1.10.

I love mine but it might be parked more now that i bought a 500..

Also if your going to buy one you better reload only way to get the most out of the 45 and 454

If you reload the .454, there is no real reason to ever shoot the 45 Colts. You can load mild to wild.
