Last week a co-worker gave me 700 rounds of Federal "Spitfire" 22LR and a 100 pack of Winchester, and today I was able to buy 5 bricks of Federal Champion bulk packs

This happened at our weekly lunch the other day. A couple was complaining about their adult son joining an indoor range and shooting up their ammo. They'd just been to Wal-Mart and wanted to know why there wasn't any ammo. He's a deer hunter, not a gun nut.

I don't need the .22 ammo, but they don't even own a .22 anymore.

Stopped by Wal-Mart this morning, they had 4 boxes of Federal 550 count and 3 boxes of Remington 525 count in stock. Second 22lr sighting in this store in 2013 for me. 3 box limit, guy in front of me got two, I got two, and the two guys behind me split the remaining three boxes. Maybe I got lucky, or maybe the supply is beginning to ease up a bit.

This happens daily at my local WM. A few boxes on every truck. Supply is the same as before, it's just that there are always a dozen people buying it off the pallet before it can even get to the shelf. Folks will wait hours to save a few pennies on 22LR, apparently.

I am not as optimistic. Demand for 22LR has been steadily increasing for a few years. Recent developments just accelerated the shortage that was already coming down the pike. Until supply is increased dramatically, I don't see an end to it.

Here's hoping that this silliness is but a faint memory this time next year.

We've begun to see more availability in the immediate area and prices are dropping -slowly-, but the folks draining the available stock of .22LR ammo at Wal-Mart just to resell it on GB at three to four times its initial price aren't doing anyone any favors.

A retail store like Walmart, Academy or Dicks gets a case of 22lr and its gone. Crises or no crises. It is simply not enough ammo for the local market. Its not enough for an individual let alone a city. The fact is that there is no ammo reaching the stores. Why people keep complaining about individuals is beyond me because they are not the problem. Its the manufacturers and the distributors that are manipulating the market as they are the only ones with access to the ammo.

And that's what I, and a few others, have said.

Last week the local store has ZERO 22lr.

But they had ~5k 9mm at a reasonable .30 round and around 8k 5.56/.223.... all just sitting there on the shelf looking lonely.

They also had quite a few other calibers too (40,38,357,45) and some commie rifle rounds to boot.

The last shipment of 22lr they got was 1500 rounds. There was more than 3x that many 9mm on the shelf.

When I chatted up one of the guys, he said there isn't even a line out front anymore on delivery day.

4 different store have told me they just don't get nearly the qty of 22lr they use to.


Something aint right on the supply side of things. Too many different sources are saying the same thing. They don't get much 22lr in.

At a large local gun store near me, they had ten 50rd boxes of Stingers...$18.99 a box. No thanks.

All I know is what I've seen with my own eyes and that's little if any 22lr ammo is being delivered to retail stores like Academy, Walmart or Dicks in my area. Handgun ammo at my local Academy is becoming scarce again. Lots of SD ammo but the regular stuff is disappearing again especially 9mm.

I've been shopping around here in NE Kansas for the past year at Walmart, Cabela's, BassPro, and numerous local gun stores and NO ONE has a steady supply of 22LR, NO ONE. I'm told that some product arrives and sells out within the first 30 minutes. And they cannot predict what they are getting, either brand or quantity.

During the 1960s I took the threats of the gun banners seriously. I maintain a reasonable (three to five year) supply of .22 and buy new only when prices are within reason. I so far have refused to participate in buying ammo panic priced, although if I am at WalMart for other reasons I will swing by sporting goods for a look-see, but so far bought only sanely priced shotgun ammo. The local brick and mortar gunshop is run by a local gun club member and he makes an effort to find .22 fairly reasonable, but as long as my reserve holds out I feel I would be buying ammo needed more for youth matches or father-and-son hunting trips.

I went to Walmart today and as I always do when I am there I went to the ammo case. I got to the case area and a lady was standing there the girl at the counter ducks down below the cash register and pulls out 2 bulk boxes of 22 ammo, I say to her I would like some of those also she says those are the last ones. I than realize the lady buying them is a employee and the boxes were hidden. So for all ouf you who say the employees stash the ammo and sell it to friends and family I saw it first hand. I did complain to the manager of the store.

My experience with human nature is that doesn't matter much. Only integrity matters and that's in far shorter supply than .22LR these days.

Maybe the big box stores are storing it and plan to bring it all out on a single day to see it there is any impact. I'm starting to get a bit miffed over the 22 rimfire thing. It has been a ful year now and essentially no change. None. If anything, it might be worse.

I refuse to pay more than 5 cents per round delivered... but I have several thousand rounds here and don't shoot it much. IMHO, if .22LR costs 10 cents per round then I don't need it. Let the manufacturers keep it and let the scalpers accumulate a million rounds each and lose gazillions of dollars when they can't dump it. They deserve the losses.
