thoughts on 168 gr ttsx

what are your thoughts on the 168 grain ttsx for a 30-06? It will be used for deer hunting and 95% of shots under a 100 yds And does anyone have any data for IMR 4350 or H414 for them

Any reason why you want the solid copper? It'll do just fine for sure. I used 165 game kings to load in my buddies and he uses the crap out of them.

I use that exact bullet from a 700 .30-06 for deer & hogs, due to California regulation. It is the best hunting bullet I have ever used. It will load a bit longer than a lead core bullet of the same weight, but will still function through the 700 magazine just fine. I use IMR 4064 or H4895. All my shots have been between 40-201 yards, the maximum distance I will attempt any shot.

splithoof thats my reason Id like to try it,most of my shots would be in 50 yd range.I just wondered if it would do less meat damage than a cup and core.

After 31 years of hunting and reloading, I would say the meat damage varies, depending on where exactly the bullet enters, angles, exits, range, etc. They do tend to drop quickly in my observation.

Based on my experience hunting deer with both solids, and various lead core designs, including a conventional C&C type. I didn't see any obvious or substantial reduction in meat damage on deer size quarry. They do shoot very well though, and maybe they punch through heavy bone and flesh on larger game than deer with better retention, but how much better? As I said, I couldn't see any obvious indications of less meat damage compared to a Speer Hot Core.

I can't think of one negative point regarding the TTSX, it's a very good hunting bullet. So if your anything like me and many others here, you'll probably give them a test run on your next deer hunt, just because you have that luxury as a reloader, ya buddy!

I use triple shocks and tipped triple shocks of similar weights in 30-06, 7mm rem mag, 300 RUM, etc. they are an excellent bullet. I took a white tail and a nice elk this year with them. I have found that they can be finicky about seating depth. So play with that. I haven't noticed any excessive or reduced meat damage vs. other bullets. Great bullet. Very consistent.

I shoot the 168gr TTSX in 30-06 with IMR 4895... they shoot well and have worked well on elk so far. My guess that on deer at 50 yards, there will be plenty enough energy to ruin meat. My advice would be to shoot for the neck or lungs/ribcage (no shoulder) to reduce meat damage. Bullet compostion probably won't matter at that range (my opinion). They shoot well for me though, might as well give them a try. Post pics

As far as load data for IMR 4350 and H414, you may look at Hodgdon's website and start with the data for the Hornady 165gr GMX. When I contacted Barnes about load data for the 168gr TTSX, they said to use the same data as the 165gr TSX... start low and work up

you dont need a barnes bullet to kill deer at a 100 yards with an o6. ANY cup and core bullet 150 grain or heavier will get the job done just fine. As to meat damage that is alot more dependent on bullet placement then the bullet your using. Dont shoot them in the meat and you wont have meat damage. Personaly i dont use barnes bullets much anymore. I had a couple bad experiences wiht ttsx barnes that penciled through deer and hardly opened if any and caused some long tracking dutys that as ive gotten older have changed from fun to WORK. Cup and core bullets just put deer down better. Now if you were talking game that went over 500 lbs then maybe id try a pemium bullet of some sort but i doubt if even then it would be a barnes.
