Hi all. Just wanted to get the groups thoughts on the Dan Wesson model 741 in 41 mag. My LGS has two in stock. Both in almost new condition. One 6 inch amd one 8 inch. Price is about that of S&W 57 in similar condition. I like the look of them, but don't know much about them, so any info would be greatly appreciated.

Ps. This would be a toy. No particular use, just the joy of shooting. I do reload, just not for the 41 mag (yet... ha ha).

Thanks!

Thanks Riomouse! Beautiful collection! How is the accuracy on them? Any thing to know about them?

Thanks!

Always buy every Dan Wesson you ever see.

Favorite revolver, hands down, forever.

I traded one away and I regret it more than not buying Bitcoin in college.

I love them, and I would grab at least one of them, if at all possible. I have a .44. I like the "plum" frame. Other than the color change from age, it's in great shape and was barely fired. The grip has some nicks so I guess it was carried on the hip, as all the dings are on the right side.

Thanks everyone! I appreciate the help. I didn't know much about DW revolvers. I have one of their 1911s (actually made after CZ bought them) and it's very nice, but never really ran into one of their revolvers.

Where would you guys say they are in quality/ performance? What can I compare them to? I have old and new Colt Pythons and old and newer S&W 686s.

What grips are thoes? Are they stock? The 6" that I saw has some after market finger Grove grips that I don't love.

Thanks!!!

Sorry guys, one more question... what is a fair price range for these guys? The 6 inch has aftermarket plastic/ rubber grips and has been shot some, but is in good condition. The 8 inch looks basically unfired.

Thanks!!!

Some of the price consideration is whether or not it comes with everything... like the tools needed to remove the barrel. You are aware the barrels are interchangeable with the Dan Wesson? It's sort of a moot point with the .41, however, because other barrel sets are few and far between... I know, I've been looking.

Expect to pay a similar price as a comparable S&W or Ruger. Comparing it to a Python isn't really fair.

Grips are interchangeable as well. Someone probably has a set of Hogues or Pachmyer grips on it, but you can find replacement wood stocks fairly easily... and it's just one bolt in the bottom of the grip.

Since we are posting photos... My 741 w/6V barrel, next to my Marlin in .41...

The DW has a reputation of great accuracy. Most say its because of the tensioned barrel, which screws into the frame and is also held at the muzzle by a nut that holds the barrel shroud on. This “pull-pull” arrangement is said to keep things aligned during firing so there is less “barrel whip” or other harmonic movement to affect the bullets path as it travels down the bore and out. The barrel arrangement is also attached to a sturdy frame, which is also said to keep things rigid when its fired.

Don’t know if thats lore or fact, but DW revolvers were the darlings of production revolver metallic silhouette competition for many years because they are very accurate and sturdy guns.

If you have a spare kidney to sell (because they’re pricy!), other .41 barrel lengths and shroud styles can be bought that can make that 6” into a totally different feeling gun in about 5 minutes.

My 15-2 .357 came in a pistol pack that has 2-4-6-8” barrels and shrouds.

My second 15-2 was bought frame-only, so it has a 3” EWK vent-heavy aftermarket barrel-shroud combo.

And my .22 LR was bought with a 6” vent barrel-shroud, and a second 4” vent-heavy was added that I bought from CZ a few years ago.

My grail Dan’s are a .41 and a .32 H&R. But they rarely ever get put up for sale.

Stay safe.

Thanks everyone. Beautiful guns! Thank you for the info and pics.

Both guns come with the wrench. The 8 inch also comes with the box and paperwork. Also both are the full under lug shrouds if that helps with ball parking a price.

Any feelings on the 6 inch vs 8 inch in .41 mag?

Any feelings on the 6 inch vs 8 inch in .41 mag?

My advice would be to buy both of them as of yesterday and sort things out later!

And no, I'm not being facetious about getting the two guns!

If I could only get one, it would probably be the 8" barrel model.

I think the 6" is the better choice... the DW is a BIG pistol. Every time I've gotten a long-barreled pistol, it's fun for about 5 minutes, and then I look for ways to unload it... but that is personal preference, of course. Given the 8" looks almost unfired... and assuming the price is right... I'd probably go there, however.

Also... another of the DW's hallmarks is a short (55^ if memory serves) hammer arc. When you first shoot it DA, it will seem a little odd, compared to regular revolvers... but you can master it.

Things must be different in PA, than here, in Wis., as if I would have left those two revolvers at the LGS, and thought about it, one or both of those, would have already been gone. It just seems like if I walk out of that store, without something like those Dan Wessons, in hand, I can pretty much bet, that that is the last time I see those guns. Just saying.

They are asking $1400 for the 6 inch and $2000 for the 8 inch. Seems high to me. Is that too much?

I’d get the 6 inch but I’d start at $1,000 and see what they say if they say no what harm have you done? If it takes $1,400 to get it than that’s what it takes remember DW revolvers aren’t common and .41’s are even more rare it’s your call but yeah I’d buy it if it were me because how many will you ever see again?

Here is my now, Safe Queen. Dan Wesson, Model 741 8" Barrel. I'm no longer hunting in Pennsylvania, so I'm seriously considering putting it up sale. I sent it back to Dan Wesson a few years ago, to get a new hammer, new springs and shims. The rig also has a custom shoulder holster. All tools, about 700 rounds of handloads, new brass and 210 gr. bullets.

That is gorgeous! With a set of very nice accessories, too.

Stay safe.

I have longer ones in the 7.5" - 9.5" range, but I don't shoot them very often. Six inches seems to be my maximum length barrel for something I end up shooting a lot.

I would be going back after the 8 inch! Just to match my 6 inch!!
Go buy either one or both, they a great revolvers. I have several.....
