THRers and their guns, what do you do with them

I am primarily a hunter and my main interest is in hunting rifles. I also have a small milsurp collection and enjoy the history associated with these guns. Sd/shtf is very much a secondary consideration. I have a few of these types of guns, but I rarely shoot them. I'm not involved in any formal competition, but I target practice almost daily.

My primary reason for owning guns is because I live in a place where the earth can move and all of societal infrastructure can fail. I'm told by the county and the American Red Cross that I should be able to take care of myself in terms of food, water, and medical for at least 3 days.

Glaringly, they never talk about police services disappearing, or suggest that I get a gun.

But having lived through the Loma Prieta earthquake, I'm here to tell you that as a part of your urban survival kit, you'd better be set up for home defense if you live anywhere near a fault line, because it would have been real easy for things to go real bad from that earthquake. I'm talking Katrina bad.

Yes, that's right. I've had a deep, gut-level feeling since 1989 that something like Katrina could happen to an American geographical area. I might have been one of the few people in America who wasn't surprised by Katrina. (Saddened, but not surprised.)

At the moment I own mostly pistols, and I mostly use these for target practice just to make sure I can hit what I'm aiming at. It is on my list to get a shotgun, but first I need to figure out how to store it safely given that I have small children in the house. I'm also beginning to look into self-defense shooting courses, now that I have the time and money to pursue that interest.

I'm not a collector and I don't consider myself a sportsman where it comes to guns. I own them out of practical necessity.

If CCW ever came to my county, I'd get a license and carry a gun when away from my home, and in that case my self-defense reason for owning guns would be even stronger than it is today.

Thanks for asking!

Welcome to the forum. I wish more people in California were like you. :)

Started out as a plinker, then self defense, skeet a little hunting, now collecting, both milsurps and older pistols, from 1880 up to the 60's on the pistols.
my problem is running out of room to stack, store and show them.
But it won't stop my picking one or two up on occasion.
Problem is I bought all the cheaper ones a long time ago, now the big $ units keep getting more expensive. the wait and see if I can get it cheaper backfired and is costing a whole lot more.
Oh well, can't take it with you.

I haven't gotten to shoot in about 3 years now because of work schedule & changes to the family unit.

Primarily I keep weapons because I consider myself independent and self-reliant; having a means to defend my family facilitates that. Second is I just enjoy owning them! Always have.

Everything I have is a shooter .

(except for the mosin, it's been retired until proper headspacing can be verified)

700 bdl 30-06 deer/elk(if I ever get out west again)

marlin 336: 30-30 deer/trunk gun. I travel a lot and it goes with me to make sure in a katrina/terrorism event I get home to my family.

ar15 and Mini 14: plinkers (will probably sell at some point)

Mossberg 500 12 ga HD/skeet/trap soon goose

1903a3 / M1 Garand / M1 carbines CMP games/JCG matches/ WWII fan

assorted 45's and sw 586 (357) these are the personal defense weapons and target shooters. Maybe IDPA some day.

So until recently, I was never much of a "gun guy" -- my wife was in a pistol shooting club when we lived overseas, and since moving to Texas we have had a shotgun for "Texas golf" (that's social trap/skeet to those of you outside the Republic,) but to be honest I lived most of my life without guns being a big part of it.

What's changed recently? My daughter started reading the Little House on the Prairie books, and decided that she needed to learn how to make a fire and pitch a tent ... and shoot a rifle. So we figured, "yes, you probably do," and joined local club and got us each CZ-452 .22 rimfires. Now we head out to the range together every other weekend or so.

It's a great way to spend time with each other doing something that's both demanding and fun. And it completely de-mystifies guns for her.

So to answer your question(s) about what we do with our guns:

Time at the range, plinking and target shooting. But that answer conceals more than it reveals -- what we're really doing with our guns is learning discipline and having fun together.

Currently, I am a gun SPONGE.

I bought my first firearm in October 2006. I grew up in NYC and had ZERO contact with guns. Upon moving to a free state, buying my own home, and starting a family, I felt I had a duty to protect my family and home the best I could. I purchased a 9mm handgun and went to the local range (government funded and run!) to become proficient with it.

A love affair was born! I had a great time poking holes in paper and wanted to learn more and more about guns. This led to learning more about self defense (CCW), the second amendment, shooting sports, and collecting.

I am currently in a phase of gun ownership where I want to try and do everything. I know own 2 handguns: one for CCW, one for the nightstand. I own 2 rifles: both generally for the range. I have a Garand on order: collecting and the history of our country have become much bigger interests. I'm trying to get involved with hunting and have been bugging my father-in-law to teach me about pheasant and deer hunting.

I handload ammunition. I write my elected officials about 2A issues. I've spoken at city council meetings about CCW. I'll spend an afternoon shooting with friends. I'll spend time at the range talking to strangers about their muzzleloader (neato!) and my AKM-clone ("where can I get one", they ask!). My wife and I go shooting. I debate and discuss issues on THR. I ask and answer questions at THR. I went target shooting with my California groomsmen the day before my wedding. I'm in the process of assembling an AR-15. I read about how guns work and why we have the second amendment.

Guns have provided me with social, educational, legal, political, and practical experiences (all positive) I never would have experienced if I had never gotten involved with them.

I hope I never have to use my guns to take another life. However, I am prepared to defend my family if others leave me no choice.

Gun SPONGE... I like that :D

Sort of describes me. I grew up in a non-gun family, had my first shooting experience in NROTC in college, and bought my first gun years later.

Today I'm primarily a collector... I'm both a history buff and a lover of things mechanical... my gun lust satisfies both urges, and I scarf up C&R's like there was no tomorrow. I love cleaning them, taking them apart to study how they work... all that stuff.

Secondly, I own firearms for self defense. It's my birthright, as an American, and a freedom not exercised is a freedom lost.

I enjoy range time immensely, but it doesn't happen nearly as often as I'd like... priorities and laziness are to blame for that.

But basically, I'm a gun SPONGE. If I see a gun I like, and I have money, it's mine :D

THRers and their guns, what do you do with them
As a gun owner what do you do with or how do you use your guns? Are you a shooter or collector?
I'm a shooter, attempting to collect on a check-by-check basis.
Are you a hunter or target shooter? Is your focus SD/carry/personal protection or just shooting?
I'm a target shooter, HD guy. I'll be an "all of the above" when I move to VT in '08

If you are looking for a gun are you looking for a pristine NIB gun or a shooter?

I'm a deal-hunter by nature, which leads me more towards shooters than lookers.

Let us know what you do with your guns. Also include what you would like to get into, like 3gun or Trap or Collecting Milsurps

I will start it off
I prefer to spend time at the range plinking and practicing SD. I like to hunt but do not get out as much as I would like to.
I would like to get back into Skeet, I shot a lot while I was in the Marines I would like to get into 3 gun. but I would like a nice AR for that.

So let us know what your guns are used for.[/quote]

Recreational shooting (55 gallon drums, steel targets, fruit, gallon of water, etc...itching to try tannerite)

Collecting(quality over quantity)

Want Mp5! and almost there.:D

OK, I'll play.

I hunt small game, upland birds, deer and starting last year, turkey.
(Have yet to bag one.)

I really enjoy going to the range with friends or my son and just plinking away.

I carry & MrsTwigg carries so we pratice drawing from concealment and firing.

I also collect, I like old guns and some milsurps. Taking 'em apart & puttin' 'em back together's part of the fun for me.

I love the challenge of getting an old gun and making shoot better than it did when I first got it.

First and foremost I am a collector. I have firearms that fit solely collecting and have still never been fired by me. I have others that are for hunting. Finally, I have my self-defense arms. But, if someone told me I could keep but one or two in each catergory, I don't think I could narrow them down.

I tend to keep a small number of firearms but I cycle through a great many. I've probably owned well over a hundred in the past seven years. But I usually only have four or five at any given time. Recently I've settled into a small arsenal that seems to suit me best, though it's not sexy by any means. I do as much shooting as I can, with a mix of shooting for practice and shooting to work up loads or calibrate some crazy new sighting system or other. I haven't done as much hunting as I used to, but I'm hoping to have time to change that.

competition (HP, tactical rifle)

i've long since given up buying pristine NIB guns as nobody makes a gun i really want. i build my own ar15s from pieces parts and have respectable smiths build my bolt guns.

my current project is an uber-light ar15 carbine. no steel except part of the barrel. no aluminum except the carrier and stock. everything else is carbon fiber. i'm hoping to get under 4 1/4 lbs. with an aimpoint.

I grew up loving guns and hunting. And I just plain loved to shoot. All the time. We were dirt poor, so it was a struggle to keep in BBs.

Now I live in the big city and have can buy pretty much anything (within reason) that I want, but no time or place to go shooting (well, indoor ranges...or ranges in general--I miss the "woods").

I like the idea of being able to provide for my own food, I like to collect them, I like to build them, I like the sport of shooting, I believe in the need to be able to protect one's self, and I believe that an armed citizenry makes for a more honest government.

All the guns i own and use are for hunting in various ways. I've used just about all of them at some point in my hunting career. My dad, brother and I own several remington 870 shotguns and 700 rifles as well as quite a few other brand rifles and two ithaca over/under shotguns. All mainly used for small game to deer hunting.

I've now acquired reloading equipment from my uncle and soon to be getting into that and doing some serious just for fun shooting as well as developing loads for hunting.

Mostly self defense, but also hunting, skeet, sporting clays, reading gun forums till all hours of the night...

Mainly hunting and target shooting. Self defense isn't why I bought any of my guns, but they can all be used for it. I'd rather not shoot anyone, but I'd rather kill someone else than me or a loved one end up on the news in a body bag.
