It depends. If it was pinned and welded you would want a gunsmith. If it was just applied with a crush washer and possibly some thread lock, you can typically unscrew them. You might try gently using a screwdriver through holes on the brake and using that as a lever. That could mess up your brake just FYI. You could also try applying some light heat to loosen the threadlocker if any is present.

As for the thread protector, you'll need to know your barrel diameter and the thread pitch. .223 barrels often use 1/2-28.
