I have tried to no avail to figure out what this rifle is. It looks like a Valmet/Galil/AK hybrid something. I also can't tell if it's a tubular stock or one of those chicom folders.

Help!

Looks like it might be synthetic. Could be a bulgarian AK74. Its hard to tell especially with all these AK accessories these days you can practically change it into a completely different gun. The muzzle and gas port gives it away as an AK74 tho. Maybe arsenal.

Definitely AK hand guards but the bottom of the receiver slopes up like a Valmet/Galil. It has a tubular charging handle like no ak I've ever seen. What kind of rear sight is that? I am at a loss.

Here is the chicom folder I was talking about.

I've seen charging handles like that for sale online as add ons, but that looks a little more original than a bolt on extra.

I was looking at it again and the pic appears to be flipped. Hence the lack of a selector lever. I flipped the image and it looks more natural. However, now the charging handle is on the left side and I still have no idea what it is.

Yes, I have seen the aftermarket left hand charging handles, but never on a production gun. Which this appears to be.

Flipped image.

EDIT* A few observations... It appears to have the pin for an auto sear, so probably not some garage build and it looks to be lacking a trigger guard.

Jackpot! Any thoughts on the left side charging handle?

NVM, the image wasn't flipped in the first place.

"The Type 81 rifle retains the general layout of AK-47 but isn't an improved variant of the license produced AK-47 the Type 56, some major difference is the positioning of aiming sights and stock of the rifle."

Yep, it's a type 81, and the image was not flipped. You can tell by the writing on the strap for the goggles on the back of the helmet.

I'm pretty sure the image is flipped. It's just a reverse of the op's pic. The painted '44' mark on the gun is backwards, and the ejected brass is in the exact same position.

I would say it's a Type 81, except for one thing. If you look close enough, you'll notice that the bolt slides back uncovering the top front portion of the rifle, unlike an AK type rifle which only opens up a "hole" (ejection port) in the right side of the rifle when the bolt is pulled back. Hence, as far as I can tell, this makes the pictured rifle ejects the empty casings up, and forward. The only rifle that I know of that does this is a VZ58/VZ2008. The finish on the handguard also looks quite a bit like what you'd find on a VZ58. If you go to the CZ-USA website, and look at a good picture of the VZ58, you'll see what I mean about the ejection port and the finish of a stock VZ58.
Now, If I remember right, the selector on a VZ58 is on the left side. So that also lines up.
I think that the muzzle attachment looks like some sort of a grenade launcher. I might be wrong though....
So my vote goes for the VZ58. I've never seen another rifle with a ejector like that. I hope this helps.:)

It isn't a Vz58.

As mentioned in post #12, it's that Chinese Type 81.

The rifle's lines and magazine design are wrong for a Vz58, and the rifle's bumps and nobbies in the soldier's picture match the picture in post #12.

Sorry, I should have done more research before posting. This is what I came up with.

http://world.guns.ru/assault/ch/type-1-e.html

The picture shows two versions, one with a standard charging handle, the other with the nobby-thingy. The picture also shows the ejection port going up further on the receiver than I thought it did, and not quite as far as the VZ58. Because the picture posted in post #12 only showed the left side, I assumed the ejection port was like a standard AK, hence rendering it different than the one in the original post. But looking at the gun from the right side enabled me to see that they are one and same.
Sorry for the mix up. May I retract my vote?:confused::confused:
