I have been doing some reading about timing. 1858 navy by Uberti is the gun I am questioning. When cocking the hammer, first click the bolt drops, second click the bolt hits the cylinder, third click the bolt locks in the cylinder notch, fourth click the trigger engaging the sear notch on the hammer. I’m thinking that the timing is off. Should the bolt lock in the cylinder at the same time that the trigger engages the sear?

Sounds exactly like all my Uberti's. On my NMA .44 the bolt rises and engages the cylinder halfway across the bolt notch. Then the bolt pops onto the notch, then the trigger engages the hammer at full cock. Uberti bolt springs are very strong, so much so they can peen the edges of the bolt notches on the Remington design without notch leads. I gently adjusted my bolt spring to reduce its force and now it engages firmly but not nearly as forcefully as out of the box. I don't recommend making such an adjustment if you aren't fully confident and/or have a spare spring on hand. Easy to overdo and lose adequate bolt locking tension.

I'm far from the expert here but from what I've researched, having the bolt hit the cylinder notch simultaneous to full cock could cause over rotation if cocking the gun quickly. Best have the bolt hitting the cylinder some distance (a full bolt width preferable) before engaging the notch and full cock is achieved.

Like Lane said, the bolt should contact the cylinder one bolt width before the notch. If it contacts the cylinder on the edge of the notch it will peen it. The bolt should drop into the notch at the same time the the trigger engages the full cock notch. When cocking the gun normally there shouldn't be two distinctive clicks. If you cock it very slowly you might hear the bolt drop first but they will be very close together. The sear is the part of the trigger that engages the hammer notches.

Thanks for the information. Especially the comment about cocking very slowly.
