Tite Group and 45 long colt

I have just aquired a 45 colt and am planning to load my own. The guy I got it from said to load 5.3 grains of Tite Group under a 185 grain SWC. This is an OK range load, but I am looking for a little more "thump" in my palm.

I cannot find many references to Tite Group powder in my loading data books, and the Hodgdon web site info doesn't have much to say either. In the loading data there is only one reference, but in the powder description it says it's a great powder for 45.

Would anyone care to share some info on this powder?

I have been loading .38's and .45 ACP with Tightgroup recently and find it to be a good accurate powder for target loads but is too fast to get higher velocity in either cartridge. I noticed barrel leading in modest target velocity loads using Speer swagged bullets and have read that others have notice it too. It apears that TG burns hot as I was getting leading at the muzzle end of a 4" revolver from a load that chrono'd at 870 fps. It does work great with 200gr FP Rainiers in the .45. Data can be found at Hodgdon's website and in current manuals, at least in Speer's #13 load manual.

If you want to load ammo at the higher end of the velocity potential you'd be better served with Unique, AA#5 or Univeral for Colt clone .45 LC's. You can load for a Ruger Black Hawk and the first model Vaquero's with 2400, H110, W296, etc. for .44 mag level performance.

Agree with Steve C. For .45 Colt loads I use Universal mostly but also Unique and HS6. Haven't tried AA5 yet but hear good things about it. Although I've tried a few of the heavier Ruger loads, a 255 gr SWC bullet at 850 to 900 fps serves my needs.

I have been looking through my manuals and found a few loads using Unique. I have been using it for several years in 44Mag and I load .357mag SWC with it also, so I am used to dealing with it.
I am not familiar with 45 yet, but I was thinking between 850 and 1000 fps might be good. I may scale that down a bit.
I can put rounds together all day long, but the challenge is in developing the right one.

i am using 6.0gr of titlegroup with either 180 / 200 rnfp and am having very consistent results....i also have data for the titlegroup and measure for other loads...if you need them

If you want thump, why are you using that itty bitty bullet? Bump up to a classic 255 gr. SWC. I haven't used titegroup in a 45 colt--rather a 41 mag--but you should have no trouble getting a pleasant and adequately 'thumpy' load in Hodgdon's published range of 5.0-6.2 grains (okay, that's a 250 rnfp, but close enough).

Bigger bullet,bigger thump theory.

i shoot 45colt for cowboy shoots,and the bigger bullets do thump harder.IIRC,eight grains of Unique makes a good thumping load.

255gr LSWC and 8gr Unique is quite accurate out of my Ruger Blackhawk. 9.0gr of Unique is accurate as well but that is getting up to a hunting level load. If you want some thump that will give it to you, just make sure it is safe in your gun...just because it is safe in mine doesn't mean anything.

I have recently switched to HP-38 in my Ruger Blackhawk. Just loaded up 100 rounds of 7.0gr of HP-38 topped with a 200gr LSWC. I have been very happy with that load and settled on it as my target load. Recoil is not too severe and people don't think I am shooting BP so I don't mind a long range session.

Titegroup

The Smith collector's sight has over the last couple of years had a couple discussions about revolvers that have blown up. Whether they were detonations or improper loadings is hard to say. BUT in both examples the power was Titegroup.
