I have a short-barrelled ruger m77 in .308 similar to this one. At the moment it has a cheap 2-7 scope which I'm not happy with. I'm debating whether to just go back to irons or to get a better scope for it. Just wondering if anyone who has a similar rifle has any recommendations? This is a hunting rifle (mainly pigs at ranges of 100-200m) but I do take it to the range occasionally. Thanks for the input.

I use a Ruger 77 RSI in .308 also, it currently wears a 1.5-4.5x scope which suits me for the ranges I shoot it at. Typically I use this one when all the shots are under 150 yards or so. The only other option for me would be to mount a peep sight on it, I just can't shoot well enough with leaf type sights anymore.

Nice rifle!

.308Win, 100-200 meter shots routine? I'd buy it a decent 'scope. Spend at least a coupla hunnerd bucks on the 'scope, you might luck out and be able to use the mounts/rings currently on the gun, if not, the cost of those will be extra.

At the ranges you mention, 2-7x would seem about right, mebbe 3-9x but I wouldn't go much higher, IMHO.

Hope your 'scope/rifle pleases you well and shoots accurately! :)

4x Leupold M-8 scope, WITH iron sights as back up. There is a very nice aperture type rear sight that mounts on the rear receiver base for Rugers.

Challenge

Iron sights are so cool when you final get that constant sight picture and get groups as good as a scope. Now I'm talking 100 and 200 yards. It is really amazing what you can do.

New England Custom Guns makes a very nice apeture sight that attatches to the rear scope base of the Ruger Rifles. this is a very nice upgrade to the factory irons.

I must be getting old, but if'n I had that Ruger carbine and scoped it, I'd go for a fixed power. Under 4X power. My first choice is a peep and sourdough. But the scope would have to be small, low and light. BWDIK.

If you want a nice quality scope for a good price, get a Zeiss Conquest 3x9, for around $400, it puts most Leupolds to shame....

'nother vote for a fixed 4X. Leupold, Burris ... any of the alternatives in the same price range. I have a 2-7X Leupold on a Model Seven in .308, and it seems to always be on 4X.

After some recent scoped shooting, I think for anything out to 300 yards a fixed 4x is ideal. Now, if you started shooting at things a 1000 yards away, we might have increase power a little. But I think a fixed 4x is best for these ranges.

I have a Leupold 1x4 20 on a Ruger .223. I dialed it in for 200 yards and can easily and consistently hit a 4 inch target. I do find that I keep it on 4 power all the time.

I have a Win Mod 70 compact Classic that is similar to yours and I have a Leupold 3x9 33 on it, it is their compact series, I would prefer a 2x7 33 but I was not thinking when I bought this one.

CLICK ON PEEP SIGHTS Under BROWSE OUR MENU.

Tally another vote for the fixed 4 power glass. It's in keeping with the role of a short, light, powerful rifle.

Many variables are set on one power and left there. Sacrificing compactness for a seldom used option. You don't need the Hubble Telescope for 300 yard work. ;)
