So I was trying several of my pistols to carry IWB, and the P225 felt noticably thinner despite the Sig grip being the widest of the group. So I lined them up and noticed the frame of the gun that is actually in your pants is much thicker on the polymer framed guns.

The slides are all similar:
G19 1.005
XDm 1.077
SR9 0.979
P225 1.007

but frames vary more:
G19 1.161
XDm 1.185
SR9 1.150
P225 0.900

The total width of the forward portion of the poly frames are 1/8" to 3/16" more than the Sig, so is this why guns like the Glock get a reputation as feeling like a brick in IWB carry?

It's all about feel. I have found the SHAPE of the grip to matter far more than the SIZE. Ever notice how uncomfortable is can be to IWB a K-frame revolver, but not a Sig? They are within 1/16th of an inch total width of one another. It's all about FEEL.

The actual width, by the numbers, is often brought out by the Glock guys, and their guns are technically slimmer than many competitors. However, the thing that makes the competitors guns thicker generally never gets put into a holster, and your hand never has to wrap around it. The Glocks on the other hand are basically the same thickness throughout, so that same thickness (or thinness as they like to claim) is either in your hand or holster.

To clarify, im not referencing the width of the grip, im talking about the width of the slide and forward portion of the frame that are actually inside the holster in your pants. The width of the grip seems to have less impact on comfort since it's above the beltline.

I agree, and it's a good observation. I carry either an XDs, in 45 or a SP101 in .357. The grip has nothing to due with carry comfort IMO as the slide and frame width, or the cylinder width of a revolver are what actually makes your pants fit a little tighter. As a result of the thickness, the SP101 is much less comfortable to carry for me.

Now grip size DOES have a very real impact on how well you can conceal a gun.

However, when manufacturers bring a new carry gun to market, they typically emphasize the slide and frame thickness, as well as the widest point. The grip LENGTH is also emphasized as it can cause printing.

So your initial assertion that a narrower frame and slide will result it less "brick" like carry feel is correct, as that is what sits in the holster. The simple solution is to buy larger pants, a longer belt, and a good holster if you want to carry a thicker framed gun.

The grip length (and width) is why I went with the XDs. Manufacturers make their guns to fit the most people. My hands are of the extra large size, and as a result, many small guns don't work for me as the trigger reach is far to short for me to have any kind of good trigger control. The length is just long enough for me to wrap three fingers around the XD's, and have my pinky rapped around the bottom. However the trigger reach is far enough that even with a narrow grip, I am able to control the trigger and shoot the gun well.

I suspect grip width may be more important to heavier set folks who IWB carry, as it may rub them the wrong way. For thinner folks, grip width seems less important for IWB carry, IMO.

Now if they could just design the polymer frames to be thin until the grip, that would be great. But alas, I'm sure it needs all that material up front to handle the forces of the recoil block above the trigger, unless they could imbed a sheet metal reinforcement in the frame to spread the forces out.

And you're right about the grip printing, all that thickness in the grip has to stick out somewhere.

Kimber Aegis vs??

I moved this to it's own thread. I couldn't delete the whole post.

I shoot my P228 slightly better than my P225, so I carry the 228 more often, and 15 rds. beats 8 rds. most of the time. But I have an IWB holster for the P225 that I like a lot so I do carry it.
