Today I took my 9 year old son and his friend shooting today. They shot my Colt Navy Sheriff revolver. It was my son's second time shooting and his friend's first time.

They did really well (see target below - my son is on the right).

All shots were from 25 yards, seated. For them I used 15 grains of Goex FFFG, wonder wad and a Hornady .457 ball.\

Great day!! And I think my boy is hooked on the blackpowder!

Very, very cool. My son was 8 or 9 the first time he went shooting with me. My wife says I "created a monster". Funny, my MIL has said the same thing about my wife from the first time I took HER shooting before we were married!

Start them early and teach them to respect and enjoy shooting -they're less likely to become psychopaths or gun-grabbers. (Is there a difference between those categories?)

YumaKid, shoot will also do wonders for their self esteem. i used to be that skinny shy kid until i was about 7 or 8 and i got started shooting with pellet guns and such, then i got to go shooting with my friend who let me shoot his .410 shotgun and a little .32 muzzleloader, it did wonders for me. i learned discipline, thinking about what is behind the target and other safety issues, and because of that introduction to firearms i am very safe with them. because i was taken out to shoot, and to plink at cans and various objects i learned how a firearm is a powerful tool. and you know teaching someone how to shoot can give them a really important stress outlet.

and no, there is not a difference between psychopaths and gun grabbers. hehe!

So, I guess your son is "Just another brick in the wall".
Sorry, couldn't resist.

Good on ya. Yer helping to bring up another generation of allies.
My son started shooting airguns with me when he was 6.
He shot my friend's .357 Smith Highway Patrolman last year at age 11.
He also shot his Grendel P30 .22 mag and my KelTec .380.
He loves shooting my Pedersoli 20 gauge Howdah Pistol on New Year's Eve and 4th of July with powder and wad only.
I plan on getting him to shoot the 51 navy, 58 Rem, and the Colonial pistol before having him try out the Howdah with shot or ball. It has a good bit more recoil.
I can't wait to let him shoot my .45 PCP, and the Draco, and the Ruger MkII.
He loves shooting my Marauder .22 PCP, it's powerful and mouse-fart quiet.
The Ruger Mk .22s are just loads of rimfire fun. And an air powered .45 caliber rifle that launches lead at almost .45 ACP velocities is way too much fun.

I think he'll want to shoot BP on a regular basis. BP revolvers are a blast.

Levi, you nailed it on the head with your first statement. I was a short-round shy kid up until age 11, then I gained 6" in height without gaining a pound; THEN I got to be the tall skinny shy kid, until my Dad gave me my Marlin .22 for my 12th birthday. Still shoot it regularly, BTW.... it's my most-commonly shot centerfire weapon since getting the Remmies.

By then, I had been shooting with him for 3-4 years; but he told me that I was "gun-savvy enough" to own my own, "...just don't forget what you were taught about handling them and don't abuse the priviledge or you'll lose it."
Dad thought I was mature enough!!! :what:
Tremendous responsibility for me, tremendous amount of faith for him; and there was NO WAY IN H*LL I was going to let him down.

Probably kept me from becoming a punk or a psychopath.
It seems to be working for my son as well; 20 years after Dad's death, I'm still finding out that he was smarter than I thought when I was a teen.
