In the latest Sunday Times, London, there's a very long and interesting article about the efforts made to trace 29 FN-FAL rifles used by British paratroopers in the so-called "Bloody Sunday" shootings in 1972. It's a tale of mishaps, malfeasance and plain bloody stupidity, but a very interesting look at just how far investigators were prepared to go to find these weapons for a judicial inquiry. They were found in Sierra Leone, Lebanon, Holland, the USA, and other places.

See http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2099-1721121,00.html for all the details. Interesting reading from a forensic/investigation point of view.

How are they going to be able to get anything out of those rifles? Haven't they been fired and cleaned thousands of times since the incident?

Seems like an attempt to blame the rifles, instead of those who used them.
