Alright, so my Ruger 10/22 has been a good gun. It is the full length version with stainless steel and wood stock. I've had it for about four years, and it's been fairly reliable. It's accuracy has never been up to my standards. I know, I know. I could add all kinds of stuff to it and make it as accurate as anything else out there, but I just want a change. I want a bolt action. Would I be crazy to trade it off/sell it and buy one of the new Savage bolt actions with the accu trigger? Accuracy is the selling point here. I've got a 10/22 carbine that I can blast away with whenever I want. I want something fairly cheap, but much more accurate. Any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Umm, no. I would trade it off or actually sell it on the open market and buy the rifle you want. I think a stock 10/22 is well, uh kinda boring after a while anyway. Mine is all tricked out so I am keeping it. But if I had a stock one and wanted a bolt Id sell it in a heartbeaT.

Those things have no resell value, since there's several million of them out there. When you can get a new one for somewhere around $170, your "reselling" options become very, very limited.

Good luck.

+1
Unless you can't afford the rifle you want without selling this one, I'd hold onto it. The 10/22 is a fun plinker.
How accurate do you want to be? Mine was pretty decent out of the box. Is yours shooting on par with other 10/22's?

Keep It

I had mine in storage for twenty years. I dragged it out this past fall to take my 12 year old daughter shooting. She had a real blast, couldn't load those magazines fast enough.

For the small amount of money you might get for it I would hang on to it. You never know who might enjoy shooting it someday!:)

I've got three 10/22s. Guess I should have stated that in the OP, I think I may just sell this one to a friend who wants it. I've found several Savage bolt actions for under $200. Anybody have one of the lower end Savage bolt actions? How accurate are they? My 10/22 will group around 1 1/2 inches at 25 yards. Not really my idea of a tack driver. Hell, my two carbines will do that. I just don't see any real advantages with the full length barrel. Maybe I'll keep it and spend my money on making it more accurate.

ANY, other rifle you choose will be more accurate than the ruger. if you want something not too expensive, marlin or savage will fit the bill. If you want something that could be stunningly more accurate , a cz, t/c, kimber , cooper, Anschutz will all be much better. as well as very old winnies, remmies, or mossies. Also a Finnish Lion, or a Biathalon Basic would be good. Out of all of these, chances are you could get a cz, t/c, biathalon basic, or one of the oldies, for between 3 and 5oo dollars the others will be a bunch more.

Sell it and don't look back.

I like 10/22's but they are a dime a dozen. It's not like you won't be able to get another one someday (new or used). I don't have a problem selling firearms that I consider tools and/or that are extremely common. If it has some sentimental value or uniqueness about it - then don't sell it.

As long as you have more than one, sell the other and get what you really want. To me a 10/22 is just another tool in the chest. I have had one for over 27 years that my dad gave me when I was 10. I will never sell this rifle. Now it is all tacticool. I bought a second one to put the Hogue/Clerke combo on and it is a fine groundhog/squirrel rifle. This was the rifle that introduced me to the joys of semi-auto shooting.

I would just get rid of it.

Trade it in or sell it outright, youre not going to get much but at least you'll have money to invest in a gun you really want.

Stick a red-dot on top of it and re-zero it.The local place has used 10/22s blued around 125 bucks and the stainless one he has,he has a 200 dollar price on it but he says he would come down some,it is n.i.b.Typically, youll get about 125 bucks for it and the dealer will add another 50 or so to that when he puts it out to sell. Not a good investment to lose that much on it.

Ive been looking for one to teach my 9 yr old son the basics of guns on so Ive been pricing them myself. If you want something more accurate and with longer range, consider going up to 22 magnum. The savage you mention is a great gun as is some older models.A mossberg "chuckster" is a great bolt action in 22 mag(its got a detachable mag and those are expensive to replace if misplaced),Ive seen them go for as little as 125 bucks, the ammo is not as cheap as 22 lr,but 22 mag is going to give you more yardage and better accuracy at longer distances with more thump. Its a good " up to 150 yard" caliber.

Try your 10/22 with an red dot on it and if that doesnt help,Id move the gun and go for something different.

I much prefer a Marlin 60 if you can tolerate a tube-fed gun. Mine have always functioned great, cheap and WAY more accurate than any 10/22. Ruger's barrels=:barf:
