Let's just say you have several thousands of rounds of ammo and want to trade somebody, dollar for dollar, for another kind of ammo.
What is the best way of going about this? In my case, I have at least 3000 9mm of Winchester, Remington, and couple others in fmj. I want to acquire .22LR CCI standard velocity.

Every time I go to the local range I bring along the ammo for firearms I don't have anymore. Just in case I run across someone who wants it in trade for something else. Was able to off load 5 boxes of 7.62x39 that way just last week for 9mm.

The best way

In my opinion is to try to use pre panic prices as long as both of the items in question are in the panic category. The fact that your talking about 9 and .22 satisfies that. So there should be no "well this is going for this and that is going for that" On the other hand, If you had shotgun shells right now and you wanted to trade for 9mm or 22, be prepared to get a thorough... uhm... well lets just say you may need to point it out on a doll someday :)

Personally, being the fair kinda guy that I am, I would trade you ammunition based on the commercial market value.

Why?

Because this is what I paid for all the ammunition I currently have.

For example, I have .22 LR I bought for about $22 for a 550 bulk pack. I also have .45 WWB I bought for about $41 a box. I would make my trades based on that.

Now, if I paid scalper's prices for ammunition, then I would have to bargain differently in an attempt not to lose out on what I already spent on the ammunition I'm trying to trade off.

Unfortunately for you, we live several states apart and I don't have any CCI .22LR. Otherwise I'd offer what I'd call a fair trade of a 550 round box of Remington 22LR if you had a 100 round box of 115 gr WWB 9mm. (9mm WWB commercial value of about $21 at Walmart.)

If you go target shooting, take a few extra boxes to the range with you and see if there are others who might be willing to trade something you need for something they want.

I would convert to price-per-round using current market value (some combination of assessing ArmsList/WalMart/Academy Sports/etc prices), and then make your offer based on that.

The honorable approach is all well and good guys... Its simply not likely in these current times. Like I said in my post. Both of the rounds stated are still in panic mode, so it doesnt really matter. But good luck trying to trade a 555 round box of .22 for a hundred rd box of 12 ga target loads. Same retail price yes. Definitly not the same current value.

I kind of figured around a pre-panic $10 -15 for 50 rounds of 9mm and 100 rounds of CCI standard at around the same price.

Obviously, market availability plays an important part in negotiations. I can seill pick up a 100 round box of 12 ga target loads just about anywhere I go, so this isn't really a good scenario.

However, 9mm is a pain to get ahold of right now, as are .22LR. That would be a more equitable trade.

I actually have some of those I got in a trade back in '08-'09. The gentleman used them to fill out a case of stingers. PM me if you want to make a trade.

I have several people willing to trade from in here and elsewhere. In the case of 9mm and .22 what is a fair way to come to terms for pricing, using pre-panic or panic?
The .22LR SV seems to be going currently in auction for about $0.11 a round and 9mm Win. fmj for $0.35. 2012 store prices were about $0.07 for the CCI sv and $0.25 for the Win. 9mm.

With a WTT ad and a lot of luck during a road trip, it could happen. We were about to go to the in-laws in San Antonio (in '09?).

I had placed an add in THR to trade Russian .223 for 7.62x39 right before we drove down. The ammo was in the trunk, just in case.
By sheer luck, a very reasonable, nice young guy in Austin responded.
He was still in town on the drive back up, not far from I-35 and we made the deal in his driveway: 1,900 rds. plus $20 for his 2,000 rds.
