And it is great!

A gentleman at the range today offered me a pound of Goex FFg. I decided to go ahead and try it, after he told me he thought it might give me better accuracy than Pyrodex RS. He might be right! ;)

FWIW, the rifle is a T/C Encore Prohunter Katahdin 209x50. Benched, at 50 yards, with a 240gr T/C XTP Mag-Express sabot, I got a group of 4 shots into 1 3/4" on my first try. 100gr of the good stuff and away I went.

The fireball is impressive, the recoil only mildly greater than 110gr of Pyro RS, and ignition surefire! It didn't leave my barrel any dirtier than the synthetic powder either.

I think I like it lots!!

Tried the Good Stuff!

I'm going to try Swiss next, after I burn up the eight pounds of Goex I have. In fact, some Goex will be burned this weekend in Springfield,Il at a N-SSA skirmish.

My gun shop carries Goex regularly. I asked the owner why he didn't carry Swiss and was told the ATF wants him to keep separate books on each brand he sells (that's a rule looking for a reason, huh?) so he sells Goex since he can sell it cheaper. He can special order Swiss, he said. I spent about 3 seconds trying to figure out the logic in all that before I had him order me a couple pounds of Swiss 3F. I got it yesterday and shot about 30 charges of 80 grains each from my .451 volunteer. It seemed that the powder fouling in the breech end of the barrel was a little less crusty than with Goex. I couldn't tell a lot of difference other than that, I don't have a chronograph to compare velocities of the same weight charges of each. I have heard quite a bit of praise for Swiss so my expectations may be a little elevated. I'll have to try it out in my 1858. If it really is cleaner, it should show up in that gun pretty quickly.

Just outta curiosity, am I the only smoke poler who dislikes the smell of black powder? Then when I come home from shooting, I get ran out of the house for "smelling like an egg fart." None of the folks I shoot with seem to dislike it, but to me it's just..."phew!" LOL Oh well.

When its fer real, like huntin, LONG range target shootin, an ifin yer stuck on black in revolvers an single shot handguns, SWISS gots more OOOMPH an loaded right better accuracy an less foulin.

Now aint no miracle diffrence! Its definate there an ya wanta nice full load fer best a clean burnin.

My BOSS is shootin 110 grains a 3F SWISS behind a 550 grain paper patch at muzzle slug inna GIBBS rebarrel job an its a match winner fer accuracy at 1000 yards. He only gets ta shoot er on his 550 yard range an its BOY howdy who WAS that masked man!?

Ifin ya look fer posts by MEC he has loads with goex, swiss etc. ya see tha diff on chrono.

Course now, We sifts H777 an adds black behind it fer a booster an get numbers ya wouldnt believe AN accuracy.

Tha BOSS wont have goex here, only SWISS an Schuetzen an KIK jes fer kicks. Now tha SPECIAL goex might be allright its spossed ta compete WITH Swiss, but it'll go downhill (Ifin it aint already) once tha bean counters figgure less time in processin makes more profit.

Aint no magic stuff in Swiss , jus small company with guys REALLY carin bout makin tha best over profit.

AN since its an IMPORT tha SWISS hassa better "NOSE" than tha domestic 'Doncha know old boy' :) (Somea tha BOSSES humor)

If ya think ya don`t like the smell of real black powder ...try a shot with a load of pyrodex with the wind in yer face ... smells just like a chemical fire . .. and makes the smell of real black sooooooo sweet !

Well, Manyirons, I DID get better accuracy with 80 grains of Swiss 3F behind a 550 grain grease-grooved bullet than with any of the Goex combinations I had tried previously. Dramatically better. However, I had modified the bedding on the stock so it didn't touch forward of the rear barrel band except for a bearing strip at the tip of the full length stock, and I attributed the improvement to that. I haven't got to shoot any since that session but I intend to do some side by side comparison as well as I can.

The Swiss set me back $17.00 a pound. I think I get the Goex for $11.00 or $12.00 a pound. That doesn't really matter if the Swiss is noticably better, but I will have to decide if it's that much better after I have burned my two pounds up.

I also enjoy the smell of black powder. I suspect the difference between smelling an aroma or an odor is what you have come to associate with it. It just smells like fun to me!

I agree about the smell. I found the GOEX way more bearable than Pyrodex. With an in-the-face wind, Pyrodex gags me pretty good. It DOES smell like a chemical fire. The Goex just makes me think of charcoal and charcoal makes me think of steaks... Mmmmmmmmm!!!

I haven't noticed the rotten eggs smell since coming back to the blackpowder/Pyrodex world. Maybe it's because I haven't used the hot water cleanup?

I have to agree about the smell of Pyrodex. That stuff is just acrid.

I think the egg smell is due to the heat and humidity here. I notice it on my sweaty skin when I come in from shooting. I don't do the hot water cleanup anymore, but I still make a good stink using Ballistol and water to clean with.

I like the smell of Black better than any of the synthetics. And I think even Goex is easier to clean up after then Pyrodex, only one man's opinion though!

The Sicilian.
