Well, what have we here? A relative noob contemplating some gun surgery.

About a month ago I bought an AR-15 (Colt 6520) and I've had it out three times now, putting about 600 rounds through it. I really do like this firearm.

But I'd like to go to a lighter trigger pull. I've looked around a bit (including, of course, here) and it seems that my likely choices are Jard, Jewel, JP or Chip McCormick. After some reading, I've decided a single stage with a 2-3# pull is what I want to try. If that proves to be a horrendously bad choice, well, then I'll bring some little bit of experience to the next effort.

With some trepidition, I've decided I can do this myself. Local gunsmith options involve fairly long wait times and shipping the lower off somewhere is unappealing for several reasons (I am aware that JP promises a one week turn around, for an approximate doubling of the anticipated cost). And I suspect if I were to pursue the gunsmith option, I'd feel like I'd asked somebody to change a flat tire for me. Perhaps I'm wrong. The rifle works now, it was expensive and I'm going to feel really bad if I destroy it. But, every do it yourselfer has tangled with that equation.

Present thinking is to get a 2# nonadjustable Jard single stage (yes, I know - large pins for the Colt), with additional expenses including a punch set and mallet and possibly KNS Precision pins. More on the pins in a bit. There is an instruction set that comes with the Jard, which I've read online, and it seems like it will mostly make sense when everything is laying out in front of me.

So, when we get down to it, early on we'll have to knock out the original pins - just tap on'em with a punch? From a particular side? Same questions for the reinstall. And the KNS pins - are they necessary? Helpful? A waste of money? Is installation fairly straightforward?

Is there any reason that a DIY trigger replacement might be better served by using one of the other trigger sets? Any other tips, advice and warnings of dire consequences will be appreciated.

A piece of cake, really. A Jard 2# with the (probably extravagant) KNS pins went in quite smoothly and the trigger appears to at least function.

With any luck I'll get it out to a range this weekend and see if I think it's an improvement.
