I'm getting an ar style rifle in the near future and am getting ideas together for the accessories for it,

I was gonna get an 11.5 inch barrel and a 14.5 barrel for it but can't decide what acog would suit each barrel length (a different suggestion for each length is fine)

I was thinking a I'm thinking between a 3x magnification and a 4x for the 14.5" and I don't have any clue for the 11.5" (though I am considering an compm4s aimpoint with a 3xmag for it)

any help is great.

I'd get an Aimpoint or similar red dot for the shorter barrel AR (and skip the magnifier) and either a 3X or 4X version ACOG (whichever model you like) for the other.

If by "barrel" you mean separate upper receivers, this would work well. You can mount each optic to its intended upper. SBR for close work (home defense?), carbine for medium distance.

Everything strambo said is spot on.

OT: Why are you getting two uppers that are so similar? You can't even purchase either of those off-the-shelf if you live in the USA... If you are going to get NFA stuff, might as well get the 11.5" but for your second upper, why don't you get a 16" or 20" for longer range work?

My suggestion if you are getting two uppers for your AR:

11.5" federally-registered upper with some non-magnified red-dot (Aimpoint)

16"-20" off-the-shelf upper with 3x-4x ACOG or other magnified sight

Revolver Ocelot: Trijicon makes glass from 1.5x on up to 6x. The 1.5x act as reflex, are almost as fast as a reflex style sight as well. You begin to lose the speed the further up the magnification ladder you go, with about 4x being the last one you can do close work with faster then straight irons. Anything higher then that and you're into true scope territory and there are better options for the money out there.

The biggest question are what engagement ranges/target distance are you talking about going for with those barrels? Anything under 300 yds can be serviced with a 3x or less, and 600 yds is quiet doable with a 4x. If you're talking in close, the 11.5 for 25 yds or less (ie. CQB) and the 14.5 for 200 and under, I'd go with probably a 1.5x or 2x on the 11.5 and a 3 or 4x on the 14.5.

An additional option is to mount a red dot on top of your ACOG for close work. I've got a TA31RCO-A4CP (USMC Chevron reticle) with the 4.0 MOA Doc Optic on top. Shifting from a cheek weld to a chin weld is all I need to do to work either sight. With practice you can run the scope with both eyes open fairly quickly, but it's still faster to use the red dot.

If your interested in my setup PM me, as I've been debating going to something else and possibly selling it. Else good luck on finding what you're after.
