Well I picked up a Winchester 94 ae pre safety I traded my remlin 336 for it the guy at the pawn shop was happy to trade a almost new 336 for the new in box 94 I was happy to get rid of the gun that sounded like it was full of broke glass and sand that also locked up if you turned it sideways and tryed to cycle it I cleaned and oiled that gun alot and then sat and cycled it while waiting Tru grit with John Wayne no improvement cleaned oiled again than watched the sequel and cowboys when the sun came up and I think I set a record for cycling a lever gun I got on Armslist and found a Winchester

Damn good trade.

I have carried a truck gun for years.
Single shot 12ga, sks<shudder>, .22rifle. .22 revolver, and .357 revolver....the need for a truck gun sort of evaporated when our state began to issue ccp.
The revolvers proved most useful to me.

In the past I've carried old '94 Winchesters, a folding M-1 carbine, a folding SKS, a Bubba'd SMLE, a pistol-grip shotgun, or any of a number of black powder guns in addition to one of many different pistols or revolvers.
Two is one, one is none.

Well I always carry when I leave the house. So wouldn't my Ruger lcp ll be considered a truck gun? It's always with me, and I drive a truck. Some times I'll carry my Glock 19 if I'm feeling froggy.

My question to the OP. What do you consider to be a cheap gun in $$?
Mt two cents though are:
If you live in eastern OK where its close cover shooting. I'd go for a 30-30
If you live in western OK where it's open country. I'd go for a 243

Mmm. No idea about Oklahoma, but down here in S. MS, I carry a H&E Topper in 12ga piddling around the house. Few rounds of 00 buckshot, few rounds of field load. It suits my needs. Though your needs are different than mine.

I like my T3, .243 Win because it's light to carry and has removable magazines, so if you're making calls to check wells, it can be loaded/unloaded quickly. It's also got a great synthetic stock that will take a lot of slamming around in the vehicle. They come in several chamberings to best suit your needs.

...just a plain single shot 12 ga. Have some buck, slugs, and bird. Just my 2 cents.

Any of the inexpensive steel 870 or 500 clones made in Turkey for under $150 or a boring Maverick 12 gauge will probably be a whole lot more useful. I would not limit yourself to a single shot. Less than $50 will give you an excellent supply of ammo. A box of waterfowl #2s, a box or two of cheap promo #7 or #8, and a couple 15-round bulk boxes of plain 1-ounce slugs will literally work for anything you might happen across to hunt or protect yourself from.

I just plain love single shots. Makes your aim better knowing you only have one. Defense wise a pump is better. For bumbing around singles are great.

400 and under I would consider cheep under 200 i would not miss if stolen (I would file a report of course) or given away

For trucks, typical 1/2 ton to 2.5ton, I’d recommend a Barrett M81 in .50BMG. Some will recommend the Canadian Raufoss round, but at ~$60 a shot uncle sams price, or $300/ea on open market, I suggest the ubiquitous 750gr FMJ. $3.00-$5.00 a shot. More efficient even if it takes a second or third shot to disable the quarry.

Oh? You meant to CARRY in the truck?....
The only firearm in my truck, as I type this, is a Charles Daly 20ga (Turkish) pump. I have an assortment of ammo in a fanny pack. #4,6,7.5, #4B,#1B, slugs... bought it for $100 at a pawn shop. Uses Rem chokes.

I like a Hi Point carbine in 45 acp. One cannot drive about with a loaded long gun in many jurisdictions, so a detachable magazine carbine is helpful. In the scenarios where I envisage need for a truck gun, range is not a significant factor, and if the Hi Point were stolen, I wouldn't shed a tear. Plus, it's so ugly that in a crowd gone wild situation, the mere sight of it might be sobering and dampening of the wilder passions.

When wheeling/camping I am more likely to bring a rifle in 30-30 or a 12 ga as camp gun.

With my recent revolver aquisitions (still waiting for them to arrive) my intent is for the one I have the least interest in to reside in an odd compartment in my Accord (yeah, not a truck, and it gets 28 mpg with plenty of power out of the v6). The gun chosen will most likely be a Charter Undercover 38. The issue is that in that location and with me not currently having a concealed carry permit, by state law it is illegal. I question the purpose of a locked gun, and anywhere else to keep the gun unlocked would be within reach of my kids when they are in the car. It may end up in the trunk after all. If it’s in the trunk it might as well be a ma deuce because size is. It a problem in the trunk. Or I could stick a marlin 60 there... I have a few of those to spare...

How far away will your shot likely be? Will you care about the hide on the Yote?

I like my 450 Bushmaster for anything out to 200 yards, and even with the 20 inch barrel its easy to use in the truck with the stock collapsed. If you already have an AR platform rifle, you just buy an upper for it:) The 350 Legend looks like another good option for an AR truck gun.

edit: I also have a 4595 that is a great little carbine for a truck gun, just have to keep your shots under 75 yards (probably) I really like any rifle with a detachable mag

I carry whatever I'm interested in shooting that day if I'm boondocking. Towndocking, I switch to a handgun, usually a little 9 mm. Nothing stays in my vehicles overnight.
