"Truck Guns"

Papoose

My "truck" carries a Marlin 70PSS.

Has its own carrying bag, designed to keep it afloat for those of use prone to falling out of canoes.

It rides in the back, behind the second row of seats. In the far back, in the tool compartment with the jumper cables and tow strap, is an "adequate" supply of varied .22 LR ammo.

Its purpose is to provide comfort and solace if I should manage to strand myself someplace.

Who knows, some day I may go to a more serious piece, like something in .223, but for now, I don't feel too naked with the Marlin.

A lever action or shotgun of any flavor (i would pick pump or break open) is my idea of a truck gun, has to be able to get dinged and shoot somewhat accurately, and somewhat compact. When I get my truck i'll probably use a .44 mag lever.

My "trunk gun" (don't have a truck) is whatever I shot at the range last.

If I had my druthers, however, it would be something compact, of intermediate power, inexpensive, and able to get me out to 100 yards max.

A WASR-10, or an 18-20" pump-action 12/20 gauge would be great. Anything that can't be stored loaded with an empty chamber is automatically out of the running due to statutes.

Ok, thanks for the ideas. :)

The bad thing is, is that I don't want to really buy a low-quality gun like a M.N., so mabey a cheap Moss. 500?

If i knew the law in Michigan and it was legal my "Vehicle Weapon" would be an 18.5" Pistol Grip 20-gauge. Something thats small, minimal recoil, easy to handle, and with a shotgun if i point it in your general direction then your probably gonna get sprayed. To me a Truck Gun as you put it would need to be a gun i can grab, cock, safety off, point and fire in one motion from my seat for defensive purposes. This of course is Handguns aside, i know a sheriff that carries a 9mm slightly buried in the center console of his personal vehicle.

Any other gun doesnt need to be accessible from the passenger compartment.

yea, ok, i'll probaly go with the shotgun, and to the general plublic, it's a bit more intimidating having a shotgun pointed at you then a rifle, and that may lead to a standoff situation, where the BG dosen't really want to come any closer, unless, of course, he's drugged......

OK, P.B. you seem pretty mature from reading some of your posts but you are 15 and this is likely a problem.

1. Are you sure this is legal for you to be running around with a loaded long gun in a truck cab (arm's reach)? I KNOW it would be illegal in Ohio even for someone like me (of age with a CCP).

2. While it is fun to fantasize about a truck gun, remember the most important thing is to learn to drive your 4000lb+ steel weapon (if you do end up getting some sort of vehicle).

3. A truck gun is something simple, iron-sighted, and cheap. Read Isher's post. A simple pump action shotgun is a good idea.

4. I don't like the idea of a 15 year old prioritizing weapons that are "more intimidating to the general public." Even if you are mature enough to deal with a serious situation like this, law enforcement, bystanders, and judges will probably not see you in this light. Don't make your weapon look like a "weapon" as much as a sporting rifle. If you just happen to be carrying a hunting rifle/shotgun when the SHTF, you will come out looking much better (not looking for trouble) than if you jump out of your truck with a tacticool long gun.

Where has the time gone? Seems like only yesterday, before pickup trucks had "King Cabs" that about every other truck in Texas had a double gun rack across the back window with an old 30.30 and a .22. These could be seen in the high school parking lot and about everywhere you went. A lot of times the windows were left down in the parking lot because the AC didn't work on the old truck anyway. I don't remember the last time I saw one. It was quite a cultural shock when I moved from California in 1974, but I loved it.

For a rifle I would say a Winchester 1894 carbine chambered in 30-30.

Shotgun would be any 12g that held as many rounds as a shotgun could.

After going back and reading some post some of you are suggesting rifles that don't have iron sights for a perfect truck gun. Thats a bad idea for a truck gun. If your scope breaks all you have is a boom stick.

Well, a single shot could hold one round. A SxS or O/U will hold two. A Saiga-12 will hold five or more, depending on magazine...

I do agree that either iron sights or a low-powered optic would probably be the best way to go for a quick reaction rifle like this.

I know that I need to check Al. state laws before I do ANYTHING. And when I said "more intimidating to the general plublic", I ment that a shotgun IMHO, looks more like a "back off, I don't want to fight, but it looks like I got the upper hand".

I'm I just being imature, or stupid?

First of all, I need to get a truck......, and I have a 95% chance that I don't get one. :(

For me the perfect combination was growing up out in the country, an old rusty F-150 and an NEF Handi-Rifle in 30-06. It was short enought to get out of the truck in a hurry and I didn't have to worry about scratches or dings. Perfect truck gun!

GLOCK 21 with 13 round mags and a Marlin 45-70 guide gun with a +2 mag tube extension.

Okay, maybe the part was missed where the OP said he's 15?! Sure, suggest he carry a Glock.

I don't want to really buy a low-quality gun like a M.N.

Okay, honestly, I *hate* the M-N, but I find myself in the odd position of defending them. My big problem with the M-N is the safety, but you could keep one stored with the chamber empty and safety off. The M-N will be sturdy and (despite crappy ComBlock sights) accurate enough. Don't confuse expense with quality. All you'd have to do is run the bolt, which would be fast. And ammo is still cheaper than just about anything else, and powerful.

Yugo M70 underfolder has always been mine. Tough, compact, powerful, reliable, and accurate enough. Perfect truck gun, bar-none.

No, but it APPEARS that you're encouraging a felony. I'm sure that's not what you mean, but that's how it appears.

No, not at all... I was merely stating what my Truck Guns happen to be at this time.
I may also take my 7.62 AKM with me and sometimes my M1S90 gets to ride shotgun.

A round stored where? In the state of Iowa you can not have a round in a rifle, shotgun, or handgun without a ccw, it must also be in a case. A rifle with a detachibale magazine would be the fastest to load. A handgun is the most ideal, but without a ccw its not a good idea. That is why a rifle or shotgun would work the best. If you need quick protection you are better off with a knife. If you are looking for SHTF, get one of the other suggestions. With your age you are limited. What are your reasons for a truck gun, hunting or self defence. For self defence you might be good with a GSG-5 I think is what they are called. Never had one or shot one and don't know what the class it is in, but looks like it would fit the bill. For hunting a shotgun will kill most in a hurry.

SKS, If it gets stolen, you havn't lost much. If zombies attack, you have the semi-auto capacity to drop one mutated scumbag after another. Light, handy, powerful, and accurate enough to get the job done. Shizzam!
