If you keep your gun in a gun case, throw a couple of these in the gun case:

above are also great for tool and tackle boxes.

If you keep you gun in your trunk w/o a case, throw one of these in your trunk:

maybe with one of these:

Don't throw one of these desi packs in a small toolbox with hammers with wooden handles...they will dry out the wooden handle...

The best way to keep your gun from rusting away in your trunk is to not keep it there. As stated above, trunks are VERY easy to rob and the last thing you need is your gun killing someone. However, if you are going to keep one in the trunk there are a few things you can do. Either paint the inside of your trunk with a thick sealant to keep it dry. Or use solid paraffin wax, rubbing it thickly over the entire out side of the gun, wood included. As for the inside of barrel and bolt/trigger group and similar moving parts, RIG grease is the best bet. You can also store the bolt closed and use the same grease to seal the gap round the exposed bolt and exterior of the gun while placing a dry---unused condom over the barrel and rubber-banding it tight. These two things will keep the barrel very clean and dry and will not slow your shooting down at all as a condom will be blown off and grease will just make a little mess.

With all of that said, it would be much better to not keep a gun in the trunk of your car. Trunks are way to easy to be broken into and usually by punks and gang folks and I would rather not be killed by your rifle in the hands of some a** hole on the street.

In Portland, OR it is now almost easier to buy a gun than to buy a can of krylon. Thanks to our far left thinking city government, when they have a problem rather than arrest a criminal they just make as hard to buy spray paint as a gun. I guess their practice with gun control laws gives them experience in this area. Have a problem; just ban it and the problem goes away, so the thinking goes in their little brains.

In many states, it may be illegal to always keep a firearm in the trunk. In my neighborhood, I'm a bit concerned about keeping valuables even in the car/trunk overnight. In a lot of cars, they can open the trunk after they get inside the car. It's not that secure of a location for storage. Bring your valuables inside every night.

In Minnesota, it's illegal to keep a firearm in the trunk unless you are headed to/from the range/hunting or have a CCW license. I personally think it's a bad idea to keep firearms in the trunk of an unattended car.

Keeping your firearm well lubed (check at least weekly for rust/damage/re-lube) and in a silicone sock will help. A trunk is a bad place to try to keep items rust free; I notice that a little water/snow always seem to find their way inside when you open and close the trunk lid. Put your firearm in your car trunk when you leave your house, and take it inside at the end of the day.

I'd love to take it when I leave and bring it in the house every night, but I don't have a garage and would prefer not to be 'that guy' on the block.... and would like to avoid that kind of display, as that could make me more likely to be robbed....

Thanks all, for the input!

I have a Mossberg Mariner. While I do not even own a truck, I keep this shotgun aboard a (salt water ) fishing boat for long periods of time. I do keep it well oiled, but never had a spec of corrosion. Definately very durable.

Similiar Question

My 18" Shotgun barrel seems to be starting to discolor on me... I oil it regularly and clean it after every use... I do NOT have a gun sock for it, it is currently wrapped in an old T-shirt.. could this be my problem??

That cotton T-shirt is made up of hygroscopic fibers that soak-up and hold moisture all too well.

Try a can of TC-11 from an ACE hardware store or the aforementioned CorrosionX or Eezox and your problem child will be in good hands.

And that T-shirt may contain sweat, if you didn't wash or rinse it thoroughly.

Sweat contains salt.

Salt makes stuff rust.

Salt is your enemy.

And in coastal areas, there's a lot of salt in the air. Surf throws up salty spray, the water evaporates from the droplets, leaving salt particles floating around. "Salt sea air," and all that.

I used to live in NY, and got in the habit of wiping a gun every single time I touched it. The habit stays with me still.

No salty seas, here in Colorado, of course, but there's generally salt around anyhow, from table salt shakers and salt thrown up from cars going over salted roads, etc.

Whenever I'm cleaning a gun or just fussin' with it, I clean the table off with a wet rag and dry it with a clean rag, even though I use a mat on the table. And I wash out the mat periodically.

Since it's usually pretty dry here in Colorado, it is pretty forgiving of gun care mistakes, but it's not so forgiving of consistent neglect.

As far as keeping the bore free of rust is concerned, I previously mentioned the possibility of keeping the bore well-greased, but with something like a Boresnake resting in the bore with the pullcord end hanging out one end of the barrel and the boresnake ready-to-go hanging out the other. Thus, you can haul the Boresnake through in a few seconds and the grease comes out with it and you're ready to go. This suggestion seems to have been missed.

"In Texas you have to keep the thing concealed."

Has there been a new law passed I don' know about?

I have not been stopped with my rifle rack yet.

Pick any gun you want, and keep her well oiled.
Keep your mags/ammo in the passenger cabin,
Rifle/shotgun in trunk.
You should be good to go!!!
I keep a Kel-Tec Sub2000 in the trunk,with a bag of mags
in the back seat. The mags work for my carry guns as well,
a G-26,and a G-19.

I would expect an AK47 to outlast the car, and outlive the trunk monkey, so long as you inspect the AK at least as frequently as you change your oil.

I know we can't technically get AK47's, but the trunk monkey is technically not a monkey either.

I have kept a rifle in my trunk for several years. Where I live the temperature ranges from 105 to -15 throughout the year.

I have used a Russian SKS and Mosin Nagant - both were treated to the same regiment and neither ever showed a speck of rust.

Spray gun down with RemOil. Put gun in silicone gun sock. Put gun sock in hard gun case (cheapy WalMart one).

The hard gun case keeps the "other" stuff in my trunk from beating my gun to death.

I take the gun out 3 or 4 times a year, reapply the RemOil and put her back in the sock and case.

Never had an issue.
