I am driving to Alaska through Canada to be a fishing guide. I have made arrangements to ship a .44 mag handgun up via airliner but I was curious how to get the ammo up there. I figured that the person taking the handgun would be able to get through the TSA inspections much faster without the ammo present. I understand that if a handgun and ammo go on the same flight, they need to be in separate locked containers. I was going to see about getting the ammo through Canada instead but I noticed that there is a restriction on hollowpoint handgun ammunition that requires a permit. I currently have a box of Nosler Partition Gold .44 magnum ammunition that I want to take with me. Does anybody have a suggestion. I looked into UPS to ship it up there and it would be cheaper to buy another box in Anchorage if I went that route.

they need to be in separate locked containers

While this is true they must be in separate locked containers, they can be in the same suitcase. What I do is use a locking gun case for my handgun then place it in my suitcase and just place the ammo in the suitcase (in its original box) and lock the suitcase. Then declare both, I have never had a problem with the TSA while doing it this was. I have also found if you pack your underwear on top of everything it speeds up the hand check.
