I remember a thread a while back about a dw commander that had a going into battery problem-I was looking at a dan wesson guardian deuce-it's their commander clone,nib,2 things concerned me-1st,the slide on the bottom left was a little short,it fit inside the rail,it wasn't flush or protuding.Probably just a cosmetic problem,no big deal, but the main concer was when i would ease the slide forward on an empty chamber it wouldn't go all the way into battery.if i let it go w/a little force it seemed to do ok.of course they won't let me field strip it to check the barrel/bushing,lugs,etc...what do you think?is it minor or should i walk away.I really want a commander, but i'm not paying the 800-900.00 the local shops want for a colt. Thanks

Hey buddy!

Sounds like a little spec issue between the locking lugs in the slide and on the barrel. Do a quick test. Point the gun straight up and ease it into battery.
If it doesn't hang up...the barrel is coming up into the slide a bit early.

Soooo,is that something fairly minor?I know you have or know somebody that's got a good commander :D if you don't find one for me,ya know i'm gonna have to come to your new house and have ya fix what ever I buy and make you and my wife pick and grin for the neighbors...that didn't sound quite right did it :what:

Does the one your looking at Kart Racer have a FLGR, or the stubby guide rod. Mine had a FLGR in it for a while, and it seemed that it didn't cycle as well with it, to the point where the disconnector would hang it up. With the stubby set up, it seems to return to battery more briskly and doesn't slow down enough with the disconnector to the point that it doesn't go fully into battery.

The original problem was with the barrel bushing crashing with the lug due to clearance issues. If you get to tear it down, see if the bushing is contacting the lug. If the slide doesn't travel fully with the bushing as it does without the bushing, the bushing is too long. If it has this problem, it has the same parts problems mine had. After about 50 rounds, the crashing was causing a lip to form on the bottom inside of the bushing. This lip started catching the barrel and slowing things down. Could have been much worse if I had kept trying to shoot it. Tuner fixed it up for me.

Even after the fix, however, with a FLGR, it won't travel as quickly, and seems to slow down on the disconnector just enough to keep it a touch out of battery from a slide release on a full mag.

Bushing/Lug Interface

Mac, If I remember correctly...

Your problem was with a Commander-length pistol in which the extension in front of the forward locking lug hadn't been removed. The bushing was already shorter than in a Colt Commander...but still not quite short enough to clear the extension. I faced the extension back until it was flush with the lug and installed a new bushing.

It's got the flgr.I've about decided to get a sa milspec instead, but for some reason I really have my heart set on a commander length. It's just gonna be a truck gun-I'm about tempted to by a shooter's arms commander and play w/it.I shot one a while back and functioned w/out any problems. It wasn't a target grade pistol by any means, but I ain't much of a target shooter myself. :) Mac,is your DW pretty accurate and reliable after you got the kinks worked out?

It functions. Barrel was poorly fit from the factory. When I push down on the barrel hood, I get a little movement. I don't get consistent lock up. I think the shots string somewhat, but then again, I'm not the best shot. Tuner did have to take a bit off of the lug area in front of the front locking lug. It's hard to describe so I didn't go into it completely.

I probably won't get rid of mine. Maybe I'll have another barrel fit to it someday.

DW Barrel Mod

Kartracer,

On Macavada's DW Commander barrel...Look at a stock Colt Commander barrel, and then at a Government Model barrel. Right at the front of the forward lug...#3. The Government Model barrel has an extension in front of the lug that the Commander doesn't. it's the same dimension as the slots between the lugs. That was removed on the Commander to prevent contact with the rear of the bushing when the slide recoils. Macavada's barrel had the
extension, and DW had simply shortened the bushing to clear...but not quite enough. I mounted the barrel in a turning fixture, touched off on the barrel,
and faced the extension back flush with the front face of the lug...and installed a new bushing of the correct length and OD. The one that was in it
had about .010 inch of slop in the slide due to the hole in the slide being about .005 inch larger than max spec tolerance.

If you don't have access to a Colt Commander, I'll show you the difference next time we hook up. When I get moved next month, I'll be less than a half-hour from ya, straight down I-85... 5 minutes from the Old 64 exit.
