So I've posted before about my fiancee, she's an incredible gal, but definitely a little "skittish" about guns... Some people had great suggestions, that I've been trying to incorporate and use. All that being said, I think we hit a turning point a couple of nights ago.

We have purchased a new bed in preparation for her moving in when we get married. We'd both had a long day and she'd decided to crash at my place instead of driving back to her parents (with their knowledge). So we're lying in bed talking, and I hear a pretty solid "thump" towards the front of the apartment. Sounded distinctly like the front door closing, but it didn't actually sound like it had come from upstairs... It was enough to get me out of bed to check things out. So I grab the shotgun from the closet and check things out, and then come back to bed. What was funny was that as I was coming back to bed (I knew that no one had gotten in the apt by that point), she reminded me to check the office too.... :) I think that was the point that in her mind guns transitioned from evil scary things to useful tools.... :D I don't know that she will ever completely get over her fear of them, but I have hopes.... I think that the change in mindset for her is the most important thing.... I just keep being reminded of the phrase "the family that shoots together has interlocking fields of fire."

Experiences like this go a long way towards making the point re:having a firearm for protection. It's taken my wife 15 years to get to where she is now -she has a CWP and will go shoot with me, helped along the way by a couple of experiences like yours. 15 years ago she asked me when we were dating "what do you need a gun for, why would you *have* a gun?"

Good! Glad nothing happened and nobody got hurt.

Try taking her, the shotgun, and a box of clay pigeons out some day. Take turns throwing and shooting the clays. Not all gun activities have to be stressful or dramatic. Sometimes they are just fun, and fun goes a long way toward removing fear.

I think it's time for you to ask her whether she's interested to go shooting at the range with you. Do you own a .22LR handgun ? if not you can rent one at your local range. After some training with a .22LR handgun , maybe you can introduce her to a .38 Spl (wheel gun ) / 9mm pistol for SD. :)
