Home Invasions in Elbert County

The Elbert County Sheriff's Department needs your help to find a man who tried to invade elderly women's homes on October tenth.

Police say he's a young black man, with a light complexion, and a small, narrow face. He might be driving a dark green vehicle with taillights completely across the back.

Police say they don't know his motive for invading the homes. But they do know that the 80-year-old homeowners had weapons to protect themselves.

The Elbert County investigators say they have no idea why home invasions are becoming popular these days. Elbert County has had three in two weeks.

Police are looking for this man who they think tried to invade two homes owned by 80-year-old women.

"The suspect went to the house on Longcreek Road and tried to kick the front door in. The elderly women let the suspect know she had a gun and when she did, he took of running. Minutes later, there was another home invasion on Middleton Road and she shot at the suspect and he left,†says Sheriff Barry Haston._ He thinks the invasions are connected because the houses were six miles away from each other. The sheriff says the man didn't steal anything from the second home, but did try to rape the woman. Sheriff Haston says having the guns kept those women alive.

"In these two cases I’m actually glad they did because it could have been a different story if they didn't,†says Haston.

The Crime Scene Unit and GBI are investigating the cases and other home invasions in the area. But the sheriff's department wants people to learn from two women in their eighties and protect themselves.

"That's why we give these courses so people will know firearm safety, how to operate a firearm, it just gives the elderly a sense of security when they take these classes,†says Haston.

But if you don't own gun and don't want to get one, Sheriff Haston says there are other ways to protect yourself. He’s trained in self-defense.

"If we can get enough people willing to take it, we're willing to give it to the citizens to help them protect themselves,†says Haston.

No matter how many people are learning to protect themselves against home invaders and other criminals, the Elbert County Sheriff's Department is still looking for the suspects. They already have people working extra shifts to get this case closed.

The Elbert County Sheriff's Department is also looking for three people they think invaded and robbed a home on October 4th.

Police say Henry ONeil Mitchell and two unidentified people got inside a house on Limo Road when one of the homeowners opened the door.___

Sheriff Haston says three adults and four children were held at gunpoint while Mitchell and his accomplices stole an undisclosed amount of money.

Police say Mitchell is armed and very dangerous.

If you have any information on his whereabouts or the two he was working with, contact the Elbert County Sheriff's Department at 706-283-2421.

But... but... but I thought if you had a gun for self-defense, the bad guy would just take it away from you and kill you with it?

I'm just sorry one of them wasn't able to put some buckshot square in the perp's chest.

We should contact these two ladies to find out if they would like to be poster-women for self-defense.

Absolutely. Oleg should make a poster about the incident. Real-life story.

well, one can dream... ;)

Rape is not a sex crime. Rape is a crime of involving power & control. Sex is only incidental to the rapist's need to have power & control.

BTW, I wish that granny allowed the creep to break in. She could be saving society a lot of trouble by helping him rehabiltate himself through reincarnation.

Too bad there wasn't a blood trail to help the sheriff find the guy.

I love it when seemingly defenseless people turn the table on the bad guys.

That is one of the most positive stories I've ever seen from a mainstream media outlet. And another thumbs up to the sheriff from me.:)

And if it IS the same guy, can you imagine breaking in to two houses in a row and running in to armed 80 YO ladies both times?:what:
Hopefully that is enough to make this loser rethink his line of work.

Well, I am elderly (71 and still counting), and I think I might just bother the heck out of a home intruder. Of course I might have a senior moment and be unable to decide whether to put a couple of 230 grain slugs in center mass or the head.

I recall one of those "Don't get into drugs and robbery" type of seminars at my high school.. and the guy walked up, and as part of his "get out of jail early" program, he goes around high schools telling others don't steal..

He the lifts his shirt and drops his pants, to reveal.... his whole body, riddled with marks. He said he got shot with birdshot from a botched in-home invasion..

Getting shot with bird shot he said wasn't the worst thing in the world, he said not dying but wishing you were, was the worst part. The 20 minutes it too the ambulance to come, didn't help.

Granny + shotgun = bad news for perps.

They should get medals.

I think all of us who had decent parenting learned early that respecting you elders is mandatory...good knowing that those who didn't have good parenting have a poignant reminder of that lesson. It's especially good to know that people your age and those who are older (I don't consider a person "elderly" until they are actually somewhat disabled by age related infirmity, which I'm sure you're not) are willing and able to defend themselves from thugs.

Senior citizens (for lack of a better word, I'm just using the AARP definition here) are probably more likely to defend themselves with a firearm than the average aged citizen and that's good to know as they are one of our national treasures.
