Two of S&W best ever

For sure two first rate S&Ws though I would be remiss if I didn't throw the Model 27 (with a 5" barrel if you please) in the mix as well.

The L frame seems to be a hard act to follow
I resisted them for many years. I finally got one a year ago or so, and suddenly understood all the "hype." I got a used -6, and I don't know if it's been fluffed and buffed on or what, but it is something else. I just had it at the range over the weekend and I'm still grinning.

It's got all the bad stuff you know. MIM parts, internal lock. I replaced the ugly rubber grips with a set of Altamont Ropers I had in a junk box. This gun makes me look like I know how to shoot. Best trigger I've ever used. Double action of course. I don't think I've ever tried the SA.

My Model 29 is a -10. It's a pretty good gun too. I need to shoot this one next week.

It's not as slick as the 686, but it ain't bad at all.

I do agree with the choice of the Smith Mod 29-2, especially the 8 3/8 barrel version.
But, I would also include among the best --- Smith Model 28 and Mod 25 (heavy barrel 1955 Target model).

The L-frames make a nice 357 Magnum gun.

The Model 29's are kind of a staple for a 44 Magnum although a Ruger Redhawk, Ruger Blackhawk, or Colt Anaconda may give better long term life.

The more recent production Model 29's have some improvements over earlier Model 29's that improve their long term reliability with full power 44 Magnum loads.

As an aside, I have several Model 19's. I cracked the forcing cone on one of them around 1980. S&W replaced the barrel on their dime but that service is not longer available. As a rule, I do not shoot full power loads in my Model 19's for fear of cracking the forcing cone.

I may buy a current production Model 19 that has the barrel/frame location redesigned to eliminate the flat cut in the bottom of the barrel at the frame attachment point.

Just a data point to consider.

I do like my 686+. Yeah, it has the “bad” parts and “evil” lock built in, but it shoots like a dream for me and that 7th shot is a nice bonus.

It got scratched up a bit on duty while riding in a drop-swivel holster for a while, so I had it bead blasted for an even matte finish.

Here with its L frame Model 69 .44 Magnum cousin. (Another fantastic L frame!)

The 4” 69 has been on my radar for a while.

I had a 4 inch model 69 thinking to replace my model 29-2. A few oz’s lighter, maybe 5, can’t recall, but not a significant amount in how it felt. Then there was the 5 rounds compared to 6.
Not enough improvement to set aside a revolver that I’d been carrying for years.
I kept the 29-2 and sold the 69.
Good gun, but, if it’s not broken, why try to fix it.
