Cruising a gun store on the other side of town during my lunch hour paid off. I don't get there very often. I didn't go there to buy, just to look. For $203, tax and call-in included, I walked out with a Stevens Model 87A .22 and a Stevens Model 940C .410.

The 87A is a tube fed .22 Short, Long and Long Rifle. The "charging handle" (bolt) is a 3/4" round, checkered knob that when pulled out makes the rifle a one-at-a-time bolt action rifle for .22 S/L/LR. Push the knob in and it is semi-automatic in .22LR only.

The 940C is a single shot, break open .410 with a crisp lock up. Looks just about brand new.

I've always been attracted to Stevens, H&R and Iver Johnson guns. They have no real collector's value but for me they are as lovely as a well crafted double bacon cheeseburger.

My Grandson gets them when his Dad says he's old enough.
