I am thinking of getting one of these rifles due to its inexpensive cost and inexpensive ammo (7.62x39). Mostly I just want this gun for plinking and some small game, but I may take it white tail deer hunting. How would this rifle perform on the deer?

You might be better off asking about this in the hunting section. That said, while I'm not a hunter and I don't own an SKS, from what I read the 7.62x39 is ballistically very similar to 30.30 Winchester, which would make it a perfectly adequate round for white tail deer. So then it's just a matter of how accurate you are with your SKS.

bigsplash,I've read where it is on par with 30-30 Win. as far as stopping power so if you are permitted a semi for deer it should work fine with HP's or SP's.Might be over-kill on small game however.tom.

Simonov.net and surplusrifle.com may have some useful info for you. If not, one of the hunting threads may be helpful.

In my state, we have to have a magazine block that will prevent loading more than 5 rounds in the magazine. Might be a good rifle for wooded areas where shots are short, but beware the dreaded "empty the gun" syndrome!

I scoffed at the SKS until I tried one. It's just fun to shoot without getting slapped around by recoil, high prices or lofty expectations.

Type 56? That's the chinese SKS, IIRC--if you're looking for inexpensive, why not go for the Yugo? They're the 'flavor of the month,' so to speak, and can be had for less than a hundred bucks. The Type 56 would be significantly more. OTOH, the Yugo is pretty heavy for a carbine, so ymmv for toting it around in the field.

I differ in that I don't feel the 7.62 x 39 is very well suited for deer huntning. The rifles are not particularly accurate, they are heavy for caliber, and to me, unwieldy. The sights are not up to hunting standards. There is almost no decent hunting ammunition for this cartridge. The so called hollow points don't help at all.
If you replaced the sights, blocked the magazine to 5 rounds, hand loaded decent ammunition, and took off the bayonet, and silenced the banging parts, then it might work.
Thats a heck of a lot of work for no improvment over the 30/30, IMHO.

The 7.62X39mm is a good deer round.
But don't fall for those fake HP's from Wolf or other imported ammo.
Those really aren't made to be real HP's.

The SP's are on the other hands real soft points that you can get from wolf.

Now, don't get me wrong. These rounds don't have the range that the '06, 3030 and .308's do.

But in the range this rounds can perform, it sure will perform.

Hell, I have seen small (but adult) deer taken down the AK-74 rounds that's only 5.45x39mm!
