Is it possible to buy a Uberti 1873 birds head and replace the birds head grip frame and grips with the standard 1873 SAA Army type grip frame and grips? Are they interchangeable, a plug and play type deal or does it require fitting or smithing? A friend has a birds head he wants to sell at what he says will be a real deal but I don't like the birds head part. VTI has the parts for I believe $145 or so. Could it be worth it?

Well, yes. Not sure the mainspring is identical, but otherwise, you're good to go. If all parts are Uberti then you'll have no trouble. As an example, here's a Single Action I've been cobbling together:

The gun is a Hy Hunter Western Six Shooter. The brass trigger guard is from an 1851 Colt Navy, and the backstrap is from a Hawes Western Marshal. The grips are my home made attempt.

One of the great things about the Single Action revolver is that its put together with lots of screws that allows parts to be removed and things done and words said over the gun and presto! you have a custom sixgun.

I "think" it can be done but I'm not sure so don't go by what I say. I will tell you one thing though, i didn't care for the Bird's Head grip frame before I shot one but became a fan very quickly. It's a very comfortable grip to shoot so you just might like the gun as is after you shoot it for a while. For real, VERY comfortable to shoot!
