Ok, this will be even harder to get our minds around than entertaining thoughts of a nuclear war, only because a nuclear war seems more realistic. But, it'll be fun. (This thread, not a nuclear war.)

Assume a President finally gets elected who decides that an armed citizenry is the best deterrant to terrorism. Assume a Congress and Senate is elected that will agree. And assume that this becomes a "national defense" issue, so state "assault weapons" bans are not valid for this rifle. The government passes a measure that says YOU, John or Jane Q. Citizen, will be given a voucher with which you can purchase ANY currently made or refurbished, new-in-box or refurb-in-box, semi-auto firearm in .223 or .308 only. (Why .223 or .308 only?!? Because I wanted to be dfficult, that's why, LOL! Seriously, though, for caliber uniformity as per armed militia requirements.) You give the voucher to your gun shop, they get you the rifle and the voucher is turned in to the government for payment. Plus, you get free ammo if you come practice at National Guard ranges. The rifle is yours to keep with no strings attached. So, what's your choice?

I'm picking a FAL.

teee... this is fun. :)

but changing my answer

Given the apparent intent of the act in question -- securing the homefront from random violence from nutjobs... surplused M4/M16 fits the bill the best I think.

You forgot to start this story with "Once upon a time..." :neener:

OK, Colt M16A1. Why mess with a good thing? ;)

Why isn't this actually happening RIGHT NOW!?!?! :banghead:

The 16" Bushmaster A3 carbine that I have my eye on right now anyway. I know it's short on range because of the shorter barrel and not in a *clears throat* manly man-sized round but I figure if I'm going to be fighting in the city it'll probably be short range anyway. My $2*10^-2...

You know, let's say that the average price spent goes around $900. And let's say that "only" 5 million Americans bite on this deal. How much money is that compared to what we're spending for Tom Ridge's Bake-Sale-With-An-Attitude Shmomeland Depends. I bet ol' Ridge has already socked away more cash than that. "Ahhem, yes, well, the federal government has developed contingency plans in case all federal reserve notes, that is, cash paper money, suddenly bursts into flames tomorrow due to an evil terrorist plot. This emergency Homeland Security cash, called "HoSecCash", no rude jokes, please, is safely held in my Swiss bank, er, in an undisclosed location." I say free rifles and full 50 CCW 24/7 is a lot less expensive. Think about it! "Die you American sc-"BAM BAM! "Did you say something? Oh, yes, that's a nice boxcutter, but, thanks, I already have a weapon. Oh, I'm sorry, it's hard to understand you above your sucking chest wound."

Since I can't have a M-2 50 cal belt fed...

Any of the following (since beggars can't be choosers):

M-1C - cuz they're hard to get and expensive
M1903 w/Unertl 8x scope (USMC sniping rifle)
M1903A4 (with Weaver 330 or substitute)
M1903 w/Warner Swazey
M1903 periscope rifle
Dwight Eisenhower Presentation Model M-14 (it looks like sporter with that high gloss blue finish, burl wood)
Garand #1

DARN! You limited it to currently made guns. I like those too, but I want the rare and exotic museum pieces. :) OK, for modern (drumroll) 7.62 mm Nato:

SR-25. It's the Remington 5R bbl, AR type action with its greater consistency over the M-14 that I like. Give me a Leupold MK 4 No. 1 with mil dots (and illuminate reticle) along with a Remington NVD adapter.

Thanks for the fun question.

Tossup between a Ruger Mini-14 with 5-round magazines and this:

:D

In that case...

I'd like a National match grade m-14 in M-21 (I think thats the code) sniper configuration. To go, please.

And if I can't have that, an honest to goodness Colt M4 or AR 15 A2-HB would be lovely.

DSA sa58 bull barrel 21" all blackened stainless steel.
I wouldn't spend the money on one otherwise, but I'd love to have one:cool:

Can I let them keep the cash, and instead I take a WELL USED weapon off their hands? If so, I'd take my old M-4. She's reliable and I know every inch of her like a lover. Good 'ole Norma Jean, COLT M-4 Carbine, serial number W016312. She's already served me well in combat and I'd trust her to do it again.

If the .gov wouldn't be so kind, I'd settle for one of her less glamorous cousins, a semi- only M-4gery.

I see Rifle is a restriction of the game.
But do not see why Semiauto .....
If qualified....select fire should be available.

I'll run with what I brung.

decisions, decisions....

I'll risk being called a snob and choose a SIG 55x. Uncle's choice. I like them all. If it is a US homegrown-only sort of deal, that's fine too. I'll be happy to be presented with one of those fine, fine M14's waiting in armory racks just for me. Once again, Uncle may select for me. I'll trust him just this once.

Regards,
Rabbit.

Since you’re going to let me spend the governments money (I guess that’s really “our moneyâ€) I’ll try not to waste it. I’d have to pick the Springfield Armory M25 “White Feather†and top it off with the Schmidt & Bender 4-16 X 50 P/M II. I’m fat and out of shape and would prefer to wreak havoc from long distances.:D

I got my very own Sako M95 waiting at the depot for the whistle to blow (with my very own TOW launcher as well)... in a few years I'll be re-posted, though, so then it'll be a M62 with any luck and an East German or Chinese AK clone without any. Then I'll be better off with my own Saiga M3...

Hmmmm .308 or .223 only...

Springfield M1-A, but with USGI PARTS ONLY....NONE OF THAT MIM OR POWDER METAL STUFF

What kind of collectivist hive-mind scheme is this? The gummint buying you a rifle means they are paying for it with money they STOLE from the rest of us. The number of high-dollar rifles listed here only confirms my long held suspicions that this place is infested with leftist parasite sleepers.

For those of you who are humor-impaired, the above is a joke. Unbunch your knickers.

Yes, I do; because on this board it is very stoutly maintained that welfare is bad. All the conservatives, libertarians, and Randroids never tire of pointing out that any money the government spends is money that was extorted from somebody else. Your thread was started as a bit of whimsy, I'm well aware. I simply find it humorous that the same folks who consider foodstamps to be an abomination would be happy to have the government spend that exact same extorted money purchasing them high-dollar rifles.
