After another year of empty promises, I thought that I wouldn't be deer hunting again this year.

I went to the bar friday night to drown my sorrows and ran into a few buddies. One of them offered to take me out where he hunts. I knew he hunted with a .300 Mag so thought I would have a perfect opportunity to fill my freezer with my .270.

So we go out and walk into the woods, all I'm seeing is the high limb pine, tag alder, low light.... shotgun country. I shrug it off, any hunting is better than no hunting. So the GPS goes back into the bag and I plop down against a tree.

Now I had a road behind me and we were just far enough in to be legal. I'm sitting there glassing and off to my left I see something big, brown and square. After further examination I discover it's a freaking pole building! So I twist around, away from this building and keep glassing.

I was wearing my electronic muffs and kept hearing this wooshing sound that I can't figure out. Eh, whatever I'm hunting.

So I'm sitting there as the shooting hour nears it's end I see this light off to my right, thinking some yuppie idiot is wandering in front of my spot right at prime time I get up to holler at him. As soon as I stand up this light takes off from right to left. Scratching my head, I watch the light zoom off to my left towards this building, then it hits me:

IT WAS A CAR!

Sure enough after a short walk I discover a two lane blacktop road about 250 yrds down range of my position running parallel to the road behind us. At this point the shells come out and the scope caps go back on. No way I'm taking a shot.

I told my buddy about it and he goes "yea, but there are trees" :uhoh: I didn't even know what to say, and there were at least a half a dozen other people hunting this ribbon of land between the two roads and at least one of them shot at something!

I was in shock, still am I think. I don't even know what to do, call the DNR maybe?

That's when you know you are way to desperate to even be hunting! Good job keeping your ethics in tact. I would've been utterly dismayed if that happened to me. I don't know why people do stupid things like that. I could understand bow hunting there but no rifle hunting! People do stupid things. The rest of us have to deal with the consequences.

One reason I carry a handheld Lowrance I-Hunt GPS. It doesn't show houses but it shows roads and established trails a well as topography. I am generally familiar with my territory but the gps helps me to choose likely spots before I am ever at an unfamiliar spot.

This weekend I will hunt for the first time this year and it will be an area I have never hunted so I will have the gps. I can add my hunting wayoints and establish some likely places that should hold deer. I moved from Virginia to North Carolina so I try to do my homework beforehand and I can hopefully increase my odds.

This is where it is nice before any hunting to have gotten out and know the lay of the land. While all the electronic gadgets are nice it is real nice to get out on land you plan to hunt and know exactly what is where and what can be expected when actually out there hunting.

rduchateau2954, good moves and hopefully something will come along for you to hunt.

There's always next year.

I did have my GPS on me but there just wasn't time to scout. It was the one and only time I went out.

This summer I plan to spend quite a bit of time out in the public land with the GPS looking for a few good places to put up some ground blinds. I am done believing other peoples empty promises when every one of them fails to live up to their own word.

Just another reason to save my pennies and get my own land I guess.
