Un-issued SKS Question

For those wondering why I am trying to get it apart, it's because the firing pin does not move as freely as I would like. Would it work the way it is? Maybe. I'd like to get it completely clean if at all feasible.

Thanks for all the tips.

....the firing pin does not move as freely as I would like.

To what are you comparing it? Maybe your expectations are too high? Mine don't move like they were teflon on ice but work well nonetheless.

How about giving it a kerosene soak and swirl and then shooting it? My Yugo SKS was gunked up like crazy when I got it and this worked fine for me. Also, it may loosen up some more if you give it a good range workout.

I have three sks rifles and I never pulled one apart that far. Soak it, make sure the pin is free and bask in the glow of your new punch set. Brass is sure to go up in value. Then reassemble the gun and forget about it.

You need a good solid surface with a hole underneath the pin. Sometimes whacking something on a flimsy table sounds like you're hitting it hard, but the table rattle is what's making the noise. A good solid punch on a strong table and a hole under the pin to allow for movement should get it out.

A soak of the smaller parts in odorless mineral spirits should dissolve cosmoline.

By the way, Surplusrifle.com is offline now, but you can still get cached copies of the SKS pages, which are very helpful.
