Unique powder

Thanks all for taking the time to school me on Trail Boss.

Okay, that’s a new one on me. This is the first time in over 40 years of handloading everything that I’ve seen this procedure used and I’m amazed. So far I’m guessing that an old dog may have learned a new trick!

Trail Boss is a unique enough powder that it does require a bit of rethinking from traditional reloading practices.

Trail Boss - Taking the rocket science out of reloading one cartridge at a time!

No scales, no books, no check weights, no powder measure, where do I sign up?! :D

I’d like to make a point

Never having come across a powder like Trail Boss, I was skeptical and worried about how some said it was to be used. It was just contrary to all my past experiences.

Not one of the posters in this thread tried to belittle me. Instead I got a genuine interest in teaching me the facts to bring me up to speed.

For that I am grateful to those here who are truly “High Roaders”.

My sincerest thanks…..Sabe

Hey, it baffled all my understanding of reloading when I heard it's intended applications and use, too.

It takes a big man to say, "I was ignorant and wrong."

I had to come to the same place myself.

Still, I am not comfortable reloading without a scale. But with Trail Boss - and only that powder - I can get over it.

I agree. Trail Boss breaks all the rules and goes against everything we have learned about reloading. It's a strange situation alright but it's here...

I read about Trail Boss over and over before I accepted my eyes were not playing tricks on me. Every time I read it a little voice said, "REALLY???"

I'm not into the scales.

You do know that you don't have to weigh every cartridgeful of powder, right? You just use the scales to verify the weight that your dipper or powder measure throws. Some people do weigh every charge [strike] but I don't know of anybody who does that loading pistol cartridges.[/strike]

;)

I use Unique exclusively and I weigh every charge in my pistol calibers. Obsessive and compulsive to some degree but I discovered that in my .32 acp loadings .1 gr. of Unique equaled about 100 fps out the barrel.

Unique does not meter well at all and I used to have an adjustable dipper that I used as well as filed cases and such but found that they just don't throw by volume to within .1 gr. So I weigh all - Don't know about Trail Boss or other powders.

But now you can't say you don't know anybody that weighs every charge in pistol calibers anymore.... :what: :D

Unique has metered well for me. Lightest thing I have loaded it is is 9mm up to 357.

Definitely a great group of folks around here. That's certainly why I kept coming back.

I hadn't been hand loading very long when I discovered Trail Boss but I still did a double take because it was so different from everything I had learned.

I will say it is a great powder though. I have gotten some very accurate loads with it in .45 Colt. I keep it on hand to load low recoil stuff for the wife to shoot. For some reason she doesn't like full throttle loads in the big bores. Yuppie girl for ya.

I can see where it would make a large difference in a case as small as a .32 acp. I wouldn't have the patience for that though. I'd switch powders and find one I could just throw and go with.
I use Unique a lot but mostly in .45 Colt where .1 or .2 doesn't mean a darn thing. It's a Ruger Blackhawk and I load to the standard loading with it so no worries.

I used to use it in .40, 9mm and .38 Spcl but I picked up a can of W231 and haven't looked back. Man, I sure love that powder. Meters great and shoots great.

Tried it years ago - great powder as is Bullseye and other powders mentioned. But all my favorite hot pet loads have been developed using Unique and I have no reason yet to change. When the last pound is gone and there is no more to be had I'll likely have some choices to be made.

I'll have to shoot what I can find same as others.

So what velocity are you getting with say, 357, 41, 44, and 45 with their normal boolit weights and an uncompressed but full load of Trail Boss?
