Unknown 8mm

A friend of mine gave me an 8mm that has absolutely no markings on it at all. Is there anyway to tell where it may have come from? I took it to a show and no one could identify when made, where, etc.
At that same show, like a dumb ass, I bought a Romanian AK. Can't cock the stupid thing without moving the mag back and forth.
Any help or comments would be appreciated.

Do you know for sure that it's 8mm?
Don't fire it until you are sure.

Give us as much info as you can. Bolt-action? Is it a Mauser-style bolt?
How long is the barrrel? What does the stock look like? Is there a metal disk embedded in the side of the stock? What kind of sites are on it? How many rounds does the magazine hold?

Post pics if possible.

Absolutely no markings? I'd be careful who you tell about this.

Another option is to find a reputable gunsmith in the area. He may be able to help you out, if posting pics isn't an option.

Unknown 8mm? Pistol, rifle or cartridge??

The AK problem sounds like the magazine is interfering with the bolt or carrier. Is it an original magazine or after market, maybe one of the 10 rounders made during the AWB. You can remove the top cover and the return spring and work the bolt and carrier back and forth by hand with and without the magazine. You should be able to tell where the problem is.

Easy fix might be a new magazine.

If it's a rifle, pull the stock off the action. Many times, proof marks or other identifying stamps can be found under the woodline.

As usual you guys have the info. Is it truly an 8mm? That's a great question now that I think about it. The guy gave me a bunch of 8mm ammo with the rifle, loaded the mag. However, the bullets would not go into the chamber, they seemed a little big. Also, the bolt cocks going forward if that makes any difference.
Thanks again for your help, I would sure hate to give this "free" gift back.

Bolt cocks going forward?

Does it look like this?

(1891 Mauser.. I know a lot were 7mm mauser, I don't know enough of the era to know if they came in 8mm as well)

Or do one of these look familiar? (NOT 8mm):

Enfield, usually .303 Brit

Mosin-Nagant, 7.62x54R

Could it be an M48BO? These are M48 Yugo Mausers with no markings except for serial number.

Could be a Spanish 93/Chilean 95/Swedish 96 Mauser, since they all cock-on-close and can fit 8x57 into the magazine. Check the pics at http://www.surplusrifle.com/ and see if any of these look like what you've got.

Heck, it could be a Steyr 1895 in 8x56R. That would be cool.

Is it possible you got an Enfield? Is there a metal band around the grip of the stock?
