Being retired Navy, this sort of image embarrasses me. Early in the Navy career, as a Gunner's Mate (Guns) on a warship, I found that the GMs who worked the ship's armory were usually the savviest gun guys and tried hard to keep up with the ever-changing technology, new weapons and optics (although we didn't start putting optics on M16s and M4s until later in the game compared to the Army).
Never much cared for any CO that wanted to get his photo in Navy Times; the good ones always try to stay out of the limelight and want their ship or unit and junior personnel to be the guys and gals getting spotlighted in the media.
Well, the photo was dated 3/24, before April Fool's Day. I wouldn't have dared to provide a carbine so equipped to even a CO that we all hated (that has been known to be a thing). Had one Captain who loved popping off grenades with his "personal" M79 from a bridge wing, another who always tried to get his trigger time in on the M60s (which left us less ammo to shoot).

That image is from Utica, NY, not gonna have high confidence in a SWAT team that installs EOTechs backwards.

I can't even tell what's going on in this photo because the image quality is so poor, but when I zoom in on the photo I would take a guess that it's an AR 15 and the angle of what looks like a magazine appears to have been jammed into the mag well backwards. That's extremely low IQ and I would not want that officer watching my back or protecting me, but at least the criminals are safe.....

Yes, mag in backwards. I had to search around online to find a clearer copy to figure out what was wrong.

Not everyone in the military nor police is a "gun person", even the ones who should be.
I still remember a buddy of mine (Army Major) having his SF neighbor mount his hunting scope for him (SF guy was a medic, not a weapons SGT). Anyway, buddy could not get it zeroed. This was because it was mounted 90 degrees off so the turret which should have been on top was on the left and the turret which should have been on the right was on the top. Can't adjust it correctly that way............ Now, not sure if the SF guy was messing with him or didn't know.

There are numerous photos online of police and military with backwards optics and magazine inserted backwards.

During our gun club's annual hunter sight-in, we get a good cross section of the public. I usually work 4-5 days of the two month sojourn. I see at least one and sometimes more each year with the scope mounted 90 degrees off. A couple have even supposedly been mounted at local gun stores. FWIW,

In the navy photo a quick glance toward the scope rings will show its photo shopped and poorly
I've got to believe the photo is altered. It would be clear to anyone, even someone not gun savvy, that something is wrong as soon as they mount the rifle.
Even if it is a real photo I'd give the man a pass. His job is to captain a ship. A Marine infantryman might never make that mistake, but I'd not want a PFC infantryman in command of a ship.

As I understand it, this appeared in The Navy Times. If it is "clear" that this is an altered photo, why did it appear there?
Just because there is a firearm in the picture does not make it on topic for THR. Stupid things happen everyday at every level with firearms... Photoshop techniques and why something may or may not have been published are not our concern.
