I know movement between the upper and lower won't affect accuracy at all, but lets say I wanted to get rid of it for OCD purposes... I've looked online at the $5.99 piece of plastic that DPMS sells, but why not use something like Styrofoam or a pipe cleaner instead? Will it cause any reliability issues or damage to the gun in any way?

It's an issue of durability. The little rubber accuwedge will last far longer, plus it won't make the noise that styrofoam will.

Because of the placement of the wedges (under the takedown pins) durability isn't really an issue unless you're switching uppers 40 times a day every day.
I've had great luck using "wedges" I cut out of those foam puzzle piece mats for kids, and they can be cut to any shape, size, and thickness to fit perfect in your particular gun.
The foam is dense and heat resistant (as long as you're not running a full auto M16 or bump firing mag after mag, you should be good), and makes no noise of any kind as well as keeping things nice and tight.

I've never cared enough to try it, but I heard a rubber o-ring around the upper lug works.

I never liked the rattle. I bought a 3 pack of accuwedges on ebay for like 8 bucks shipped. but I had to trim so much off the wedge that I though I might have done just as well to put some strip of fat rubber band or a small bead of silicone where the accuwedge goes.
I also put a rubber o-ring around the front lug (sure looks like the same size o-ring that comes on lee reloading dies. specifically the one on the little metal funnel on the powder through die that gets tossed in the drawer if you're using an autodisk) The gun's a little hard to take the upper on and off now, but the rattle sure is gone.
