Varget powder for .308

Does anyone out there have great success with Varget powder in the .308?
Plan on some long range target and varmint hunting with this rifle.So would it be best to go with a 150gr bullet or higher or with a much lighter bullet say in the 125gr range?

I would pick lighter bullets. Small varmints and paper don't need much bullet mass in order to be dispatched. The larger ones, like hogs are a different matter.

Varget should be good. I hear good things about Varget, but I haven't tried any yet. I have a tub of IMR4064 to work through.

Varget is good stuff.
Varget is my favorite powder for 308 Winchester. Using Sierra 168 Gr. MatchKings my groups are tighter than ReLoder 15 and WW 748. Neither one of those is a bad choice either.
Have used Varget with good results in loads using Winchester 147 grain FMJ.
A lot of shooters I know are switching to Varget from ReLoder 15 in .223 as well.

It's a great powder with lots of usees.
I use it for .223,.300Savage,.308,30-06 & 45-70
It meters well in my RCBS uniflow. I have sub MOA loads for .223 w/ 55&60Gr bullets & 30-06 with 165gr bullets but my M1A is getting bedded so I'll have some sub MOA loads when I get it back.

when i developed loads for my 308, i thought i found the perfect combination when i tried rl-15. it shot tight groups at high-velocity. then i tried varget. it shot tighter groups, but didn't get the velocity that rl-15 was getting. i ended up settling on varget because i am an accuracy freak - i'd much rather have an accurate rifle over a fast rifle.

as far as which bullets, i reccomend that you go w/ heavier bullets (150+). much better bc's, and if you really want to stretch a 308, you might want to go heavier yet. i reccomend a 165-168 grain bullet for all-around use.

varget has replaced 4064 as first choice in my .308.
I haven't taken time to wring it out extensively, but preliminary stuff shows a very low ES & SD, and it meters a lot better than 4064.

Thanks for the info guys.. I recently picked up some Varget to reload using Hornady 165 gr boattails.. really look forward to loading and shooting them !

Never tried it in the .308, but Varget has become a favorite in the .22-250 and .375 H&H - very versatile powder

Nobody can predict which powder is going to shoot the best in any one rifle. That's what the bench is for and it must be rock solid with proper bags or you're just spitting into the wind.
