Hey all, does anyone know if there is a specific time period in which one must hold a government issued form of ID before being allowed to purchase a gun? (i.e. I moved to VA about 3 years ago but still held a Maryland drivers license up until recently. Is there a certain amount of time I must hold my VA license before I am legally allowed to purchase a firearm?) I have proof that I have lived at my Virginia address for longer than I have held my Virginia drivers license (my lease shows I moved into my current apartment in August of 07; and I have a previous lease showing that I have lived in Va for at least a year prior to that; since august of 06 at least). Please let me know as I have been contemplating purchasing a handgun for quite some time. Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

I don't think you will have any problems. You are a Virginia resident now and the laws of Virginia are the only ones you have to concern yourself about.

Actuality you broke VA law by not getting a VA DL
From the VA DMV website
Within 60 days of moving here, you must obtain a Virginia driver's license. However, if you hold a commercial driver's license (CDL), you must obtain a Virginia CDL within 30 days.

Most states are the same in this regard. Oh and don't worry to much about the infraction above at least it has been corrected now. ;)

And I'm sure you'll get a nice notice in the mail and a tax bill too. Happened to a GF of mine after she moved to VA from CO.

Nope, once you have your DL you are good to go.

I changed my DL and bought a handgun all within the space of about an hour in Delaware once. Didn't have any problems.

Hmm

Instead of guessing about state laws, why don't you guys go look them up.
Go here for that http://leg1.state.va.us/000/lst/LS540577.HTM

§ 18.2-308.2:2. Criminal history record information check required for the transfer of certain firearms.

When the photo-identification presented to a dealer by the prospective purchaser is a driver's license or other photo-identification issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles, and such identification form contains a date of issue, the dealer shall not, except for a renewed driver's license or other photo-identification issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles, sell or otherwise transfer a firearm to the prospective purchaser until 30 days after the date of issue of an original or duplicate driver's license unless the prospective purchaser also presents a copy of his Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles driver's record showing that the original date of issue of the driver's license was more than 30 days prior to the attempted purchase.
