I never bothered to verify this, but in VA what is the legal age to purchase a handgun? I thought it was 21, but someone tells me it is in fact 18, and the state code as far as I can tell says 18. It says possess, but not obtain. Does the law distinguish between possess and obtain?

I am getting really sick and tired of the Feds. I think the state's rights movement needs to make a comeback in a most serious manner. I am also getting really annoyed by companies that masquearade corporate policy as law.

§ 18.2-308.7. Possession or transportation of certain firearms by persons under the age of 18; penalty.

It shall be unlawful for any person under 18 years of age to knowingly and intentionally possess or transport a handgun or assault firearm anywhere in the Commonwealth. For the purposes of this section, "handgun" means any pistol or revolver or other firearm originally designed, made and intended to fire single or multiple projectiles by means of an explosion of a combustible material from one or more barrels when held in one hand and "assault firearm" means any (i) semi-automatic centerfire rifle or pistol which expels single or multiple projectiles by action of an explosion of a combustible material and is equipped at the time of the offense with a magazine which will hold more than 20 rounds of ammunition or designed by the manufacturer to accommodate a silencer or equipped with a folding stock or (ii) shotgun with a magazine which will hold more than seven rounds of the longest ammunition for which it is chambered. A violation of this section shall be a Class 1 misdemeanor.

This section shall not apply to:

1. Any person (i) while in his home or on his property; (ii) while in the home or on the property of his parent, grandparent, or legal guardian; or (iii) while on the property of another who has provided prior permission, and with the prior permission of his parent or legal guardian if the person has the landowner's written permission on his person while on such property;

2. Any person who, while accompanied by an adult, is at, or going to and from, a lawful shooting range or firearms educational class, provided that the weapons are unloaded while being transported;

3. Any person actually engaged in lawful hunting or going to and from a hunting area or preserve, provided that the weapons are unloaded while being transported; and

4. Any person while carrying out his duties in the Armed Forces of the United States or the National Guard of this Commonwealth or any other state.

What you need to do is to get busy and try to get the 17th amendment to the U.S. Constitution repealed. Ratified in 1913, this amendment took the power to elect senators away from the state government representatives and handed over to the same ignorant twits that vote for representatives to the House -- er, that'd be ... US! That's what really put the nail in the coffin of state's rights. Of course, the Civil War didn't help ... but it's sorta hard to repeal a war.
Seriously -- what you really need to do is to convince the American people that the fedgov is not the best thing since sliced bread, and not big daddy, and not the answer to every problem that plagues us. Until you convince the majority of the American people of that, I think you're whistling in the wind.
The fact that you're right is...well, sorry, it's meaningless. That's the way it is in this sorry union.

Hmmm

That's what I am finding. I never realized that.

The other thing that kills me is that I can sell and ship a gun straight to someone in my state. Actually what amazes me is not that I can do that, but that most people won't believe it.

Off topic.

This drinking age of 21 crap needs to go. Especially because it's Federal agenda crap shoved down the throat of the states.

This is one that has been discussed ad nauseum. In a nutsell: State law is 18, Federal law is 21. Federal law applies to federally licensed (FFL) gun dealers only. If the person you're buying from is not an FFL holder, they can sell you a handgun as long as you're at least 18.

Hold on

So where does Walmart get off refusing to sell handgun ammo to those under the age of 21? Isn't there a precedent for lawsuits regarding age discrimination?

Ok

That's what I was wondering about. There's a law also about ammo.

Something's not right about this.

Do you have to be an FFL to sell ammunition?

Never mind. There's seems to be a ammunition license.
