 I am planning a trip next month from GA to the CMP South store in Anniston, AL. My plan includes the purchase of a few more rifles to add to my collection. Does anyone know if I can do walk in purchases or do I still have to go through a FFL to have it transfered from AL to GA?

I know the CMP ships direct without a FFL and I have heard of other people going to the CMP North and South stores to make purchases but I am not sure if they still have to ship them or if people can take them home the same day. Thanks.

Its something thats been "in the works" for some time. Last year, they were hoping to have it opened by the end of the summer (last summer). Not sure if they ever did.

You might want to call them though. The folks there are awfully nice.

It is open. I'm planning on taking a trip there in a few weeks myself. Here is a better place to find answers to your questions....

My understanding is, if you buy from their store.....you walk out with the weapon. If you buy from their booth at a gunshow or similar event....your selected weapon gets tagged for you and shipped to you.

Let us know how the trip goes...and what kind of stock they've got.

I was in the South Store a week ago. Bought a H&R M12. Paperwork is the same as for mailorder, birth certificate, proof of competition, etc.
Don't know about interstate sales there, I am from Alabama. Check the site or call 'em up, they are very helpful.

They had Greek return M1s with beat up stocks and a lot of crude looking replacement handguards. Some "correct" rifles at $900, some Danish return barrelled actions, a showcase of stripped and refinished receivers. The remaining crop of '03s have good to well worn metal and beat up grease soaked stocks.

I was able to pick out a H&R with almost no wear on the metal but the stock is not pretty. My friend found and bought one of the few Kimber 82s without a boxcutter scar. The Remington 541Xs lack rear sights and appear rode hard and put away wet.

Greek and LC .30-06 ball ammo.

You pick out and take with you after submitting the same paperwork you would for a mail order. Remember, the CMP is exempt from GCA 68.

I was just at the North store last Saturday to buy a Kimber 82. If they have you on file (with proof of CMP affiliated club membership) or join up with the required paperwork (proof of marksmenship training, citizenship, CMP affiliated club membership), you can buy over the counter with regular background check. They notarize on site.

oooh, baby! I will drive along I20 in August. This will be one of hte stops.
