Wally 700 or Win 70 Black Shadow

Hi;

I am getting ready to purchase my first Michigan woods bolt rifle. I want a 30/06, since I am already set up to reload for my M1.

I have narrowed my choices to the Remington 700 sold at walmart, and the Winchester 70 Black Shadow. I like the price of both, they both seem okay to carry. I slightly like the looks of the BS better. I understand the 700 has a better trigger.

What do I need to know? Advice? Experience?

How much do they want for either of those??

Local dealer has blue/syn Tikka T3's for $450----and the Tikka blows either of those 2 away. It also comes with scope rings-----sling swivels--adj trigger---free-floated barrel and much lighter weight.

Just a suggestion.

That is about $100 more, including rings. I am checking the net for reports about the tikka now.

The 700 an ADL or one of the VS/Senderos that uses the aluminum bedding block in the stock?

What about the Model 70? Winchester makes the "stealth" which is a short action competitor to the Remington 700 VS, their Stealth Model 70 even uses the aluminum bedding block stocks. That "Black Shadow" name almost sounds like something they'd give a long action Model 70 that used a similar tock to the Stealth.

I doubt you'll find one of the heavy barrelled Remington 700 or Winchester 70s at Wally World...when I went on a quest for my 700VS, it wasn't even listed in Walmart's special order catalog. <edited>Looking at my '03 Winchester catalog, I don't think the Black Shadow is a long action Stealth, ala Remington Sendero; it's about 3 lbs lighter, so I'd imagine its a sporter weight long action rifle. Looks more along the lines of a long action Coyote model, even those are heavier than the Black Shadow.

Supposedly, newer Remingtons have some quality control problems...I haven't experienced none in my VS so far.

Trigger-wise, either rifle is adjustible...thing is, adjusting a Remington trigger will void the warranty if you needed to send it back to the factory for work. Winchester/USRAC is OK with trigger adjustments on their rifles.

If you're out looking to show Bambi how it's done, I doubt you'll be disappointed by either...don't overlook the Savages either; Savage puts together an excellent rifle for the money.

go w/ the 700 and don't look back.

i read all over the net about remingtons quality problems, but haven't seen it yet. in fact, i've picked up 3 new rems in the last 2 weeks (model 7, 700 adl, and a 700 bdl, and in march i picked up a new vls). anyway, these rifles shoot fine, are easy to tune, and look and feel great.

Of those mentioned in the thread, the Tikka is definately the superior rifle albiet at at a higher price point.

I like Winchesters myself but have never had any sort of trouble out of any Remingtons or Winchesters. I think I mostly prefer the bolt design on the Winchester and the way it glides back rather than falls back like the Remington tends to do... Truth be told, I prefer Rugers to Winchester or Rugers but I don't think they have anything it the price range... You can either get wood with blue with wood or the stainless with the plastic. You can't get the budget blue with plastic. Pity...

Handle them both, if you haven't already and see which comes up to your shoulder better and go with that one. I doubt either will disappoint.

I love my Remmy's; got rid of my Win. 70. If you can find a Tikka, buy it. It's heads-and-shoulders above the others mentioned.
