Walther P99 has it's first malfunctions..

Sniff, sniff. I was hoping it would go on forever without ever having a malfunction but alas the day came that I new would.

Sheslinger was using some cheap Alabama Ammo 115 grain hollowpoint reloads and had two rounds fail to allow the slide to go into battery. It was almost as if the brass was mis-shapen by a miniscule amount or something.

At this point I am going to chalk it up to bad ammo. It happens but the first malfunctions after such a good run are always hard. :(

The good news is the new CZ P01 went through the same ammo like a champ.

Oh well just felt the need to let everybody know. I am not bashing the P99 as I love it. I just wanted to let everybody know that no matter how reliable a machine is, it is bound to have a hiccup from time to time.

Alabama Ammo is questionable and prone to poor quality control. So I'd blame the ammo.

The only reliability problems I had with the P99 were slide stop issues. The slide would lock back sproadically. Grip, stance and faulty magazines were not the cause, so I sold it. :)
 
For the past four or five years or so, I've kept tabs on failures of my guns with me shooting them vs everyone else shooting them. I only have two guns that have never failed at all and one has only had about 20 rounds put through it by someone other than myself. My Taurus PT99 has proven more reliable than any handgun could be expected to be. Don't think I've ever put a commercial reload through it though.

Every other pistol I own has failed with someone else shooting, and some with me of course. Not blaming the other shooters, but if it's 100% for me, that counts as 100% for me.
 
same old problem

The Walther P99 I own has the same old problem time after time.
I bought a Walther.40sw P99 2 tone model,non-proof marks.Direct descendant of Smith and Wally.(SW99)
Well the persistant problem that occurs is,if I sling shot the first round,everything seems fine but the gun doesn't go bang!
It takes the round,seats the round in the chamber and barrell 100%,cocks the trigger,and the trigger spring tension appears nomal.Just no detonation
Now if I use the slide release on the first round it works flawlessly.
I bought the pistol NIB from a local sporting goods store.Paid premium dollar($650)when the P99 2tone craze was in peak craze.and hadn't realized the proofmarks made the difference from authentic Walther to Smith and Wally replica.
I emailed Walther about the problem,they basically just laughed at me.They claimed the pistol does go bang eventually and there is no manufacture problems with it.Good thing it's just an expensive plinker.My carry is anything but this pistol.
 
For what its worth, I bought some Alabama Ammo FMJ reloads at a gun show to put through my Sig P239 when I first bought it...40 cal, 180 gr. Out of 100 rounds total, I had 10-15 events where the slide wouldn't go all the way back into battery.

The next week, I bought a couple hundred rounds of Winchester USA brand 180 gr JHPs...failures ceased.

The P22, like many semi-auto .22's has its ammo likes/dislikes.
You need to do the old get a box of several types, all high velocity, and try 'em out. Wally World cheap bulk does not work in mine. Mini-mags, CCI Greentag, Stingers, Velocitors, Rem Thunderbolts, AE5022 HV all work for me.
If you get a P22, make sure the date code is AD, for 2003, so you'll get the latest manufactured ones, with -A mags.
-I have a 3.42" barrel version, date code AC (factory test fired casing dated 8/02), that I picked up last Sept.
-I just went yesterday with a friend who got a 5" barrel ver., code AD. He was on the local "waiting list" for a month; very popular pistol here.

I can point to a lot of postings on the P22. Let me know if you need more info.

After 2000+ rounds through my P22, I can tell you this right now.

The first 500 or so rounds, use high velocity... I found Brass Jacketed Hollow Point from Winchester or Remington to work fine for breaking in the main spring.

After that, standard velocity stuff works fine. It won't want to feed it in the beginning but if you break it in on hi-velocity stuff, it'll eat any generic brand you give it, though I stick to the Rem and Win hi-velocity anyway.

Be warned though, it has teh tendency to kick the shells on you sometimes... I don't mind but it disturbs some people, including my girlfriend.
 
ive stayed away from the super cheap ammo, S&B mostly somo assorted other stuff, range ammo, and wihchester white box. not a hiccup.
dont damn the pistol, especially if the rounds looked messed up.

Hey I wasn't damning the pistol at all. It is a spectacular pistol. I am one of those people that is a realist and knows that all firearms will malfunction from time to time.

I was just posting that it was my first malf. in many, many rounds and it was with really crappy ammo. Actually it is a tribute in many ways.

I love our P99 and trust it with our lives with quality ammo.
