So I strolled into the local toy store not really looking for anything particular and what did I see, but a nice little Walther PPS in the used case. I had handled one before and thought it would make a nice addition to the summer carry rotation. I asked the salesman to pull it out so I could have a look. It was .40S&W which really doesn't turn me on , but is not a bad self defense round. I looked it over and the only tell-tale sign it had been fired was a little brass residue on the underside of the slide! Then I turned the price tag over...$399.00!!!:what: Came with 1 6rd and 1 7rd mag, box, and two back straps. I snagged it up and out to the range I went! I did not clean, lube, oil or even wipe the pistol off. I took it straight to the range. I put 150rds through it some defense rounds (Hornady TAP 180gr XTP & 180gr Speer Gold Dots) and mostly my 185gr reloads. No malfunctions. It was really a nice shooting gun even though the .40S&W is a little more snappy than the 9mm or .45ACP. I used both back straps and prefer the smaller one. The sights are 3dot white which I might switch out to night sights eventually. The range session was uneventful, just a lot lead on the target. Follow-up shots were good, muzzle flip was there, but not hard to control at all. I thought with a .40S&W in this small of a package it would be all over the place, but it wasn't. I easily emptied both mags into the CoM of IDPA target at 30ft and dumped one mag into the head no problem. I took it home and cleaned it up, take down was a breeze. The trigger is Glock-like, but a little stiffer with a nice short reset. Recoil was there, but nothing to write home about, i.e. it didn't hurt to shoot it. I think a 250-500rd range session could easily be done with this pistol. Fit and finish is typical Walther/S&W. All-in-all I'm VERY pleased with its performance. I have a Crossbreed Supertuck coming for it and it will disappear under a t-shirt or button down the front short sleeve summer shirt. Here are a few pix! What do you think, good deal or not? :D

Sweet deal and great gun! Nothing wrong with the .40s&w. I shoot it along with 9mm and .45acp. The recoil IMO is no worse than the .45acp, and only slightly snappier than the 9mm. The old-timers still say that it was a "solution to a problem that didn't exist," but I disagree. It really does split the difference between the high capacity of the 9mm and the bigger, heavier bullet of the .45acp. The best part about the .40s&w is that right now it's the only thing readily available anywhere you go. Finding 9mm and .45acp for a reasonable price is nearly impossible these days.

Anyways, I wish I could find a deal like that on a PPS. I've been wanting one, but don't want to spend over $600 to buy a new one.

Enjoy your new pistol!

That's a good deal and even a greater one with no malfunctions.

Nice find and a good buy. I would have jumped on that too. I would like to mate one up with a P99AS in .40.

+1 -- that's a terrific price on a terrific gun. Congratulations on the good find. Many folks go their entire gunlife without running into such a good deal. You should hop out and pick up a lottery ticket while you on the hot streak.

These have really gotten my attention lately. Their SO THIN!.... love it.

if i found one at that price, id snag it

I wasn't that impressed when they first came out in a 9mm and compared to my PM9 the ergonomics and size weren't that appropriate to pocket carry.
Now that they have done a .40 I would consider one in a discrete OWB and as thin as they are (thin is in according to Kahr ) I might even have some pants that would handle IWB for my expanding mid-section. :banghead:

That is a great deal. I saw one at a local gun shop for $729:eek: Not sure why they wanted so much. I have a pps in 9mm. There have been many guns come and go from my rotation over the last 18 months, but I find myself always going back to the PPS because nothing else is so comfortable. Also every time I take it out I am dumb founded by how accurate it is.

For sucha thin light pistol it is remarkably accurate! My 5 shot group is pretty tight. I thought I'd only hit two shots on the target until I walked up to look at it! ;) Seems like a good solid gun so far.

Wow, that's a great deal! I bought one new last summer and absolutely love it. It's my everyday carry pistol; none of my others are even nearly as comfortable to carry.

I have been very impressed with how accurate it is, too. I had a few FTEs for the first 100 rounds or so, but after that it has been perfect. Last week I put about 100 rounds through it w/o any malfunctions. The recoil or muzzle flip tends to make a wear mark on my thumb, but I can live with that since I don't typically put that many rounds through it at once.

I bet you have a keeper there!

Another 50 trouble free rounds! Even shot 12" steel plates at 30yrds with no problem at all! Fine little carry pistol! :D

I'd buy one if the gun still functioned with the backstrap off. I would worry that something nuts would happen and the backstrap would become unclipped, which would render the gun inoperable. Call me paranoid.

I'm glad you like it though. I fired a 9mm PPS and loved it.

You can still decock a PPS by pulling the trigger like a glock right, without taking the backstrap off?

If so, superglue would solve the above 'problem' :D

It's really tough to get the back strap off, not that it can't happen, but the magazine sole plate covers the strap release making it less likely. The thing that gets me the mag release placement. Luckily I have the SW99 that I've practice with and gotten used to the mag release being on the trigger guard. I've had a couple Glocks with extended mag releases drop the mag in the holster and I immediately removed the extended release a replaced with the stock so I know what you mean about Murphy's Law. ;)

Congratulations on a great deal, and thanks for the pics. I"m looking into the PPS, and I'm liking what I'm finding.

Based on my experience owning this pistol, I don't think there is any way the backstrap is going to come loose by accident. I'm not even remotely worried about that happening. It's on pretty securely and it takes some pretty deliberate action to remove it.

I agree, the backstrap in not going to pop off. I have not taken mine off for about a year and to be honest their was a period where I forgot all together that it even came off.

On the other hand I have thought of my one complaint, and it does not really even pertain to the gun. I like the idea of having my ccw and my nightstand gun on the same platform. Example being, glock 26 glock 19, xd subcompact xd compact, HK P2000sk Hk P2000. That way both guns have the same grip angle, sights, controls, trigger etc. That is one thing that you can not do with the PPS.

It was not a good deal. It was a GREAT deal. I'm curious to what the age of yours is? You can tell by the AE, AB or AK number (whichever) on the side of the gun. The serial number on these does not tell the age. If I may, allow me to refer you to PPS Forum for all kinds of additional info on these guns.

I enjoy my PPS .40 - I just don't get enough time to shoot it.

Yep, is was made in '09 (AK between the proof marks) fired in April '09.

Almost can be done with a P99 or S&W99. I have a S&W99 in 9mm that is pretty close to train with, controls are in the same location. Not ideal, but the PPS is such a nice gun I'm willing to work with it. Yep, Glock missed the "thin" market, if they would have put a single stack 9mm or .40S&W they could have really made a splash. Maybe next year we'll hear about it.
