Im looking for another toy to add to my collection. Im on the fence between a 22mag or a 17hmr. So I decided to ask the gun gurus, which would be a better choice and why?

You didn't specify whether you are talking RIFLE or PISTOL here. I have a Taurus .17 HMR snub nose which I just LUUUUUUUV for concealed carry. A local gun store has the exact same gun in .22 magnum which I would have bought were it not for the fact that they also had AR lower receivers.

neither, get a .38 special, at the smallest...

Edit: Sorry, jumped the gun on this one. Don't know much about rifles..

What will the rifle be used for? Hunting? Target? Collection?

Either of those rounds are fine if you intend to do small game hunting or close-medium distance varmint hunting (prairie dogs.)

FWIW, the .17 HMR is based off of the .22 WMR case, so if you do some research, you may be able to locate a gun that can shoot both simply by swapping out barrels. I know some guys who've done this with 10/22's chambered in .22 LR. They'll get a second barrel for .17 HM2 that they can swap out.

Neither of those rounds, however, would be anywhere near an ideal choice for a defensive or carry round. I would strongly advise against relying on any rimfire round for personal defense as they tend to be underpowered. Rimfire cartridges are also notoriously unreliable with all but the premium ammunition brands.

I had a bolt action Savage 93R17 in .17 hmr which was remarkably flat shooting. The only drawback is the cost of ammo, it seems absurdly high for a rimfire cartridge. It sure was fun to pop cans at 100 yards with a cheap scope though, and I was a newb at the time. If just plain fun is what you're looking for, either one would probably do just fine.

I voted 22 mag just because i like it. I have never shot a 17 so take it for what its worth.

I also have the 93R17 in 17 hmr. Its my fav gun. The amo is a tad more expensive. But its very flat and more accurate then the 22 mag. I would get the 17, you will never look back!

I like my 22 mag a lot. The ammo is way cheaper from what I can tell. I have shot rabbits with both rifles with similar results, which were profound. Both make enormous exit wounds. I would guess the .22mag would pack more of a punch at longer distances becuase of the heavier bullet, but that .17 is screaming along. Have fun either way!

I already have a 10/22 that Im having a custom stock made for the 22mag/17hmr would be for plinking/hunting/collection . Were can i find a good 22 mag rifle . I looked at the Savage 17hmr lastnight and for the money it was a nice looking piece. My game plan is any firearm I buy would be for keeps. As for personal pertection I have a PT1911 Taurus if something smaller is needed i have a 5 shot 22mag about the size of your key ring, I call it my little friend.
