I especially like this part.

But both common sense and the law of averages escape presidential candidates, especially Republicans looking to assert their conservative bona fides. When it comes to gun control, they not only have to be against it but they have to insist -- in raging opposition to common sense -- that the more guns around, the safer everyone is.

My mama always told me I lack common sense and now I get confirmation from a Washington D.C. newspaper reporter.

Maybe Mr. Cohen needs to consider the fact that that attacks like the one in VT tend to happen in schools and not in police departments or army bases for instance. How come none of those lunatics don't get up in the morning and think: " Gee, let me see, shall I attack Fort Benning or the Atlanta Police Department?!" Somehow they always end up inflicting death and mayhem in places where weapons are forbidden.

He might point out that young people -- especially young men -- sometimes drink too much and have hormonal surges that compare, on a mild day, to Vesuvius on Aug. 24 of the year 79. (Goodbye, Pompeii.) To think that a university president in his or her right mind would permit students to carry guns on campus so stretches the term "right mind" that it loses all meaning.

Elitist... prick... :fire:

I can vote, I can join the military, I can slowly kill myself with tobacco, but God forbid I have the tools at hand to defend myself.

And how are they getting that beer? I thought you had to be 21 .

I love how they make it sound like all males are getting hammered while going to class which is why it shouldnt be allowed...thats a very weak argument IMO

If university students are drunk in class there's something wrong besides their inability to defend themselves :scrutiny:

Lets start with the fact that the Author is advocating that we should mimic a TV Show in real life.....get a grip!

Further proof that newspapers are most useful when lining the bottom of a bird cage.

As e-mailed to Mr. Cohen:

Of Fred Thompson, you wrote, "He is the True Republican -- a credit to his party, a threat to us all."

I'm sorry you see Republicans as threats, especially when it comes to guns. Your tirade against college students carrying guns is uninformed. Do you realize that you must be 21 to legally own a handgun? This eliminates the greater part of college students. Do you realize that carrying a handgun into an establishment that serves alcohol is illegal in many states? Do you realize that concealed carry permit holders have been shown statistically to be some of the most law abiding citizens in the US of A?
You probably won't take the time, but you might consider the following resources concerning the Second Amendment.

I actually wouldn't trust most of the students at my university to handle firearms. I don't think that responsible students should be punished, however, because of the majority of retards...

I don't think that many of the drunkard frat kids would carry firearms if they could anyways. I don't think it's on their list....

Also, how come they are all afraid of 'college kids partying with guns'?

1. Parties at my university are off-campus. This means that they can 'party with guns' already.
2. Cho didn't seem the partying type. How does the fear shift from crazy psycho serial killers to the enemy now being drunk partying kids?

Of course... university students are the only people that ever get drunk! http://around-the-world1.blogspot.com/2007/05/police-officer-honored-by-mothers.html

Obviously, in reality, the antis simply think that only 'the chosen ones' should have firearms.

Do you realize that you must be 21 to legally own a handgun?
To buy a handgun from an FFL (at least in VA) at 18 you can buy a handgun through a FTF transfer. But you must still be 21 to get a CCW permit so my post doesn't add anything :)

Oddly enough, our volunteer military is chock full of "kids" the same age as those students, who are considered mature enough to handle weapons and make life and death decisions on a daily basis.

The argument that men and women who are of age to serve, vote, marry, be held accountable and even executed for their sins... are too "hormonal" to handle a gun responsibly is totally specious.

Ron Paul Ron Paul Ron Paul!!!!

Because Thompson is exactly like Adolf Hitler, and everyone who would vote for him worships Satan.

Where did that come from?
Most responses were directed at the "reporter", not anyone else.
Maybe to just stir up s***? or close a thread?

pcosmar, the inability to laugh at oneself is the first sign of a burgeoning Nazi. I'd be worried if I were you.:p

Like that random dirt mark on the kitchen floor... Maybe it really WAS a swastika.

ArmedBear, Maybe I have just seen too many threads closed for mindless and pointless bickering.
This thread was not about Ron Paul. It is about the reporters bias.
I can't even blame Fred for that.

This is because I was burglarized one very dark night by a klutz of a thief who burst though my back door and ran around the first floor making so much noise that I was certain he was coming for me. (This was before the deranged had recourse to e-mail.) I very much wanted a gun -- not to whack the intruder but merely to protect my life.

Herein lies the rub: he wanted a gun but didn't have one.

But he still can't admit he's wrong-headed.

Any politician who offends Richard Cohen must be doing SOMETHING right.

That's all i need to say about him

My response:

Mr. Cohen –

Regarding your July 31st op-ed, are you saying that defending yourself against deranged people in your home is understandable, but that defending yourself against deranged people in a classroom is unthinkable? Do you surrender your right to protect yourself by walking out your front door? The tragedy at Virginia Tech may have been unavoidable, but one armed student or faculty member could have stopped the massacre and saved a lot of lives. You must get past this TV world you’re living in, Mr. Marshal Dillon fan, and understand that self-defense is a basic human right.
