I don't mean to be a party-pooper, but these sorts of online petitions mean next to nothing to politicians. Doubly so if a bunch of the signatures are from people who don't live in their district, or state for that matter.
Instead of circulating the link to the petition, how about posting up the contact info of the various legislators, so that people might contact them directly? A letter on their desk (or a quick polite call to their assistant) goes a lot farther towards convincing these folks what really matters to their constituents.
