Advocate was kind enough to answer
I personally have no idea...but I'd guess that the Ruger 10/22 must be one
of the most popular rifles sold today. Glock handguns certainly must be at
the top of overall handgun sales as well.
I wouldn't mind having a dime for every Mossberg 500 pump shotgun that
leaves the retail stores daily...I would think that the Remington 870
Express sales are right up there too.
I don't have a clue what centerfire rifle is at the top...Winchester is
gone, so that would leave Savage 11*, Remington 700 and Ruger 77mkII...at
least those would be the popular choices here in the Midwest.

You can't forget both the historical, and recent popularity of the 1911's.
But I definately have to agree with the mossberg 500 and the remington 700,
both here in norfolk and back home in north buttfudge, va.

In America? Rifle - Ruger 10/22 semiauto .22 rifle far and away
leads among .22 rimfire. SKS 7.62x39mm among centerfire rifles. AR-15
also very popular - but I doubt as many have sold as of the SKS.
Pistol? Ruger MkII dominates .22 rimfire field. No clear candidate
dominates the centerfire-pistol field - but the leading brands are
Glock, Beretta, Sig, and (maybe) Kel-Tec in current sales. 1911 and
clone .45 ACPs very popular.
Revolver? Taurus and Ruger - in a wide variety of models in .22
rimfire, .38 Special, .357 Magnum.

No question about the Ruger being the best sellor and probably the
single most common firearm around.
> SKS 7.62x39mm among centerfire rifles.
I would argue a bolt-action rifle in some 30-cal round (especially
30/06) as the most common centerfire gun. Again, there is little
question that the SKS is the most common centerfire automatic.
However, there are a lot of M-1 carbines around too.
> AR-15 also very popular - but I doubt as many have sold as of the SKS.
AR-15's are hundreds, if not thousands of $. I have seen SKS' for as
little as $100 or so.

My wild guess is the 1911 colt is the single most common centerfire
pistol.

True, Tauus and Ruger sell a lot more guns these days, But don't
forget all those S&W and (maybe) colt revolvers made for decades that
never wear out

"Bolt-action rifle in 'some' 30-cal round" includes a lot of
DIFFERENT model rifles and a lot of rifles chambered for DIFFERENT
cartridges (.308, .30-06, .300 Win. Mag., etc.) - but the SKS is ONE
model made for ONE cartridge. That's why I'd rate it easily the
most-popular centerfire rifle - of any type, not just semiauto - in
America now.
>However, there are a lot of M-1 carbines around too.
It's hard to say how many were brought home from various wars by GIs
- but one thing is indicative: there always seems to be a lot more
demand for the ammo that the SKS takes than for the ammo the M-1
Carbine takes.

In order of popularity in Texas: . 22 cal rifle (got my first one at
age 10), shotgun ( mostly 12 guage or 20 guage), assorted centerfire
rifles (generaly bolt action), handguns

He didn't give a date range; but I suspect the biggest seller has been
lever actions. They won the west.
