What are the top 5 gun friendly states?

I kinda figured Tennessee would definitely be one of the friendly states?
Only kinda sorta.

Dont forget, just a little "circle/slash" decal is a legal NO GUNS sign, with the force of law. Class C misdemeanor and a $500 fine for passing one while carrying. You need a HCP for any kind of carry; concealed, open, in your car. You can carry in a national or state park but not in most local ones. In Nashville, you can carry at Radnor Lake or Bicentennial Mall, but not at Centennial Park or on a Greenway. So much for preemption.

Our laws are better than some and worse than others.

Don't forget about New Mexico. It's been an Open Carry state forever and a Shall Issue state since 04. Concealed carry in your home, property and car has always been legal too. Very GU. Friendly state.

Oldandslow, I have to disagree with you in your ranking of Illinois as #2 , in post 16 after California as a worst state and Hawaii as behind Illinois.

This year Illinois passed concealed carry shall issue legislation and LTCs will probably be issued starting early next year. Right now non-residents can carry a loaded concealed handgun in their car if they have a LTC from their state. There is a provision for issue of non-resident LTC in Illinois. You can transport an unloaded handgun encased in your vehicle passenger compartment with a loaded magazine in the same case. The vehicle console has been ruled by the Illinois supreme court as a case. You can transport on your person a handgun to any place not a restricted area, called fannypack or container transport and "6 seconds to safety". No silliness like being restricted to transporting to a range, gun smith or gun shop or hunting area. Bars and restaurants serving alcohol are restricted areas for transport, but for those with an Illinois LTC carry is permitted in restaurants that serve alcohol if over 50% of revenue is from food. Compare Illinois to California, New jersey, Maryland and Hawaii and I don't think we are close to the top 5 worst. We also have good self defense law.

I'd also like to add that Illinois is number 9 on the Brady Bunch's list after Rhode Island, Maryland, Hawaii, Connecticut, N.Y., Massachusetts, N.J. and California. Who knows after passing concealed carry this year we might be in 10th place next year on their list.

I notice that noone has discussed Texas. We are pretty gun-friendly here ever since we got id of the Democrat governor. While we canot carry openly except on your own property, on college campuses or in hospitals, we don't do too badly. No waiting periods, no restrictions on FA or SBR's. You don't even need a permit to carry in your car, and if the "No Guns" sign doesn't have specific wording as spelled out in the law (Section 30.06, by the way) it doesn't count.
Only place I have ever been asked by a Cop "Are you carrying". "No, Officer" "Why Not?"

I'd say the first three are Arizona, Alaska and Texas. After that it's a bit of a toss up.

In my personal experience, Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee are pretty gun friendly. We've got it pretty good in Alabama with the contiguous states recognizing our CCW.

Still have some things to work on, but North Carolina moved up quite a few places after October 1st.

I'm not saying Illinois is anywhere near the top 5 best states, but the penalty for 1st and 2nd offenses of carrying in a prohibited place is $150, not near as bad as Tennessee.

Texas has a few miles to go before it makes the top ten, maybe even the top 20. The next gov will probably be a determining factor there.

I belive Texas has a great cost of living factor. I am not surprised that California is the worst state in anti-gun laws.

It is somewhat subjective, and what an individual ranks as most important to them.
Con carry?
Carry with permit?
Open or concealed carry only?
Restaurant/bar carry?
church carry?
school carry?
Magazine cap limits?
"assault weapons" ban/restrictions
NFA friendly?
The list goes on

I must agree with that! Texas - concealed carry only with a relatively expensive training and permit process. Doesn't sound that gun friendly to me.

I'm from CO. and we have a few bad laws, the worst were just enacted but even with what I see as totally unconstitutional laws of magazine bans and private sale regulation we have very clean carry laws and I don't need a book and a lawyer to navigate the places I can and can't carry day to day.
Lucky Derby made a fairly decent check list. We should not have to fear our gun being seen, where we eat, the fact that we worship, attend a carnival, or public park.
I am a fond believer in private property rights as well but I am more inclined to have that regulated by the owner and customers response rather than the state.

Having lived in Minnesota and California and now living in West Virginia I'm very happy with the laws here. Short of a few restrictions in the law the overall attitude of towards firearms is very positive socially. People here would probably find it a little weird if you didn't have a few guns at home and no one looks twice at someone carrying open or otherwise.

I checked an the Texas CCW costs $140 almost as much as the Illinois CCW, $150, that will be issued in 2014. A 16 hour course is required, 8 if you have a DD214, or have had NRA basic pistol or better, still quite a bit more than the 4 to 6 hours Texas requires.

A non-resident Illinois CCW costs $300 (ouch).

Ouch. Here in CT it's $70.00 for a permit, which is good for five years.
You have to take an 8hr training course, which all vary in cost depending on which instructor you use. My wife took it not long ago for $60.

I'm in Idaho and love it!, there's a rifle in the truck and a pistol on my hip everyday. My ccw was only 70 bucks and cost of living is way better than California. I came to Idaho 15 months ago broke and out of work, I thought I was just visiting my family but 2 weeks after I arrived I started working and its been the best job I've ever had. ...and potatoes are delicious haha

My friend in Idaho says I will like it there. He has a CCW and says it isn't crowded or overpopulated there like it is here. Of course cost to living there is way better than San Francisco CA bay area.
